I am planning a southeast asia trip and I would like to stop in India on the way. I want to spend a week in the golden triangle area, which seems very doable since I've seen 4 day tours advertised.
India has a reputation for being cheap but I get the idea that this part of India is an exception. I looked around and most of the budget accomodations seemed to have terrible reviews. Any recommendations on good budget places in Delhi and Agra (Jaipur actually seems reasonable)? Or should I just take a tour for this leg of the trip since I'm not familiar with this country? (I am traveling with my fiance - not on my own, incase it affects anyone's advice) Also please let me know if you think I'm better off just cutting this and spending more time elsewhere. |

Well we were hoping to spend $50-$60 a night on a room, but after doing research I think might be willing to spend more to lower the risk of sleeping with cockroaches.

Where have you been looking at reviews? I've found several places in India with good reviews. I like lonelyplanet, tripadvisor, hostelworld (they list more than just hostels) and indiamike for hotel reviews.

I actually checked Tripadvisor, Hostelworld, and indiamike. I skipped Lonely planet. Most of the reviews for hotels under $100 said either the room had cockroaches/bed bugs, the hotel hassled them and tried to quote them higher rates and/ or tried to make them pay twice, was located in the worst part of city, and so on.
I didn't come across any of these places, so this is a huge help. Hotel Classico in Delhi was the only one I saw that looked good. Thanks for the help! |

I haven't looked at lonely planet accomodations section for Delh/Rajasthan, but I can convincingly (based on my experience growing up in India, and frequent visits to Delhi/Rajasthan) say that you can get fairly good hotels for $40-50 -- $40-50 per night can give you good moderate cockroach free accomodation. I can try finding special listings if you will like. Arvind
