Hi! I have a 2 day layover in hong kong on my way to nepal, and i'm wondering: is the airport near (1 hr away) the downtown area? I'd like to see some of the city, but would it be a hassle? Should I just book a hotel close to the airport and sleep through it? Is it expensive? Does anyone have any recommendations for a two day stay?
I appreciate it! |

As far as airports go, yea its pretty close, only 45mins by bus to central I think... (HK Island). Definately take advantage of the layover and book some accommodation in Causeway bay or Kowloon.
Planning trip to South East Asia + India for 6 months. October to end of march, any advise appreciated!! |

Your choice is either stay AT the airport at the overpriced airport hotel, or head for the city. There is nothing much in between. 45-60 minutes and you are in Kowloon with tons of choices.

It's easy to get to and from the airport to Kowloon or Central. Check out the airport train and the free buses from the station. Easy enough to stay near everything in the city rather than out at by the airport. Have a little fun.

It really easy to get from the airport right into the centre of Hong Kong - I would definitely stay on Hong Kong Island (Causeway Bay is cheap). You can either do it by MTR (a lot more expensive but much faster and more comfortable) or by bus (I think you get the A21 to Hong Kong Island). You just head left out of the airport and you are there. It takes around 1 hour to get there by bus.
Once you are on Hong Kong Island its pretty easy to get where ever you want to go. I would suggest going to Mongkok(not sure how its spelt, sorry). Its this amazing market district with millions of people, stalls, markets (and a number of bad smells) etc. Lantau island is also really interesting if you want to see the big buddha statue. Hope you have a great time! I travel a lot; I hate having my life disrupted by routine. |

The Airport Express train costs about HKD100 and takes you either to Kowloon or Hong Kong Central. It is the easiest way as the station is at the front door of the airport terminals whilst the busses are downstairs.
Depending on what you want to do governs where to stay (IMHO). Kowloon for shopping -either in Tsim Sha Tsui (TST)Monkok or Prince Alfred areas (these are the train stations for their areas. Whilst HK island itself is good for shopping it seems to have a more Western feel to it. Accomodation is variable in HK depending upon whats on (trade fairs and the like) so just look online for backpackers or hotels. |
