I'm flying into Phuket late one night in early October and hoping to bed down somewhere for the night before travelling to the islands the following morning. Can anyone recommend a decent hostel/hotel near where you can get the ferries thats also a good place for meeting fellow travellers?

Also, any recommendations for which island to travel to first would be appreciated!

We stayed at the HI place in Phuket City. We were surprised how good it was. The bed arrangement is a little odd in the dorms but I'd have to give it the thumbs up. We basically did the same. Stopped by Phuket Town for a day just to see it and then onto the beaches. We didn't really think there was much to the town itself, just a pretty nasty smell. Although it was fine for a days wondering (and some Christmas shopping).
