Hi Guys an Gals,
Theres about six of us going over to thailand 3rd of feb for a month. Having never been before, should we book somewhere to stay? or can we step off the plane and see which way the wind blows us? This is the preferred method of course but......
We are going to travel round the country so camping might be an option, ive heard you can camp in the national parks, but then ive heard that accomodation over there is that plentiful and cheap that its not worth it.

Plus are there any must see places, we are definatly going to book somewhere in Bangkok for a couple of nights when we first arrive,so any suggestions for a nice posh but cheap hotel as a bit of a treat to get acclimatized would be welcome
ta ta for now

For reasonable hotels that won't be too noisy in Bangkok, check out places along Phra Arthit--there are a few places there for about 500baht that are clean.

Normally I'd say don't bother booking but there are 6 of you and you're going in high season so it might not be such a bad idea.

You haven't given us any idea of your budget or what kind of area you want to stay in so it's kind of difficult to make recommendations.

If you want something a bit on the posh side for your first night or two you could try looking at www.passionasia.com. If you want to stay in the Kao San Road area (backpackers heaven) then hotels like the Royal, the Trang or Viengtai might suit you - they range in price from about 1000 baht for a double up to about 1600 baht. All come complete with breakfast and have a swimming pool and stuff like that.

Since you've got 4 weeks then after Bangkok you could head north to Chiang Mai and perhaps do some trekking (no need to pre-book) and perhaps then down south to get in some beach time.

Enjoy
