Air Asia has a sale going on right now. You can get tickets for about $25. Normal price tickets on Air Asia are about $40-60.

You can also take the overnight sleeper train from Bangkok and arrive in Chiang Mai the following morning, think it was around 7:30 a.m. This will save you from paying for another night in a hotel in Bangkok.

If you are in Bangkok for a few days you can get your ticket a day or two before. If you have a hotel near the Skytrain you can use the Skytrain to take you to the Asok Skytrain stop and from there take the subway to the train station.

If you intend to blow Bangkok off and fly directly to Chiang Mai - keep in mind that Bangkok has two airports and they are on opposite sides of the city! Make sure you know which airport you fly out of for your local, in Thailand flights. Don Muang is DMK and Suvarnabhumi is BKK.

Good luck.
