In Bangkok at the moment and planning to head up to chang mai tomorrow if possible, I got ushered into a supposedly government run tourist beaureux earlier and was told it would be hard to get the train up there because of protests and that it would be difficult to get a laos visa in changmai and he was trying to get me to pay for the trip and visas there and then, felt a bt dodgey though so i declined, does anyone know of the current (or at least relatively current) situation on this?

I don't know what the case is at the moment, but when I went to Laos, you just got a visa at the border -- no need to do it in advance.

I'm up in Chiang Mai right now. Met a German about a week ago. He certainly had no problem taking the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
