I've read it's both possile and not possible. Has anyone done this recently? We don't want to get to the border and discover we should have got visas in BKK!

Are you asking about getting visas for Laos from the Thai side of the border? Or vice versa?

You don't mention anything about Laos but you do mention getting it in BKK which means you'd already be in Thailand so it can't be for Thailand.

I'm confused

IF you are talking about getting a Lao visa entering from Thailand at Chiang Kong then as of this time last year it was a matter of showing up and filling out a visa form and paying $10-20 USD or so. It was a really simple process. They even have a photo booth nearby that you can use if you don't have any passport size photos. I can't imagine anything changing over the last year to cause the process to become difficult. All of this being said, I over paid by getting my visa a few days earlier in Chiang Mai. I would have been better off getting it at the border.
