Hi all -

Can anyone recommend a great cheap hotel in Bangkok? We are looking for something like an upscale hostel or B&B. We'll need to have AC as we'll be there in August.

Any suggestions on markets as well - any food stalls that must be eaten at? Any other suggestions on markets are really appreciated. Thanks!

I am fond of the food court at the Lotus-Tesco. It is at the end of the Skytrain line, so very easy to get to and is air-conditioned. There is also a worthy food court at Panthip Plaza, a mall filled with electronic goodies.

Can't really recommend a hotel; We live here and don't use them.

After summer in the NY, the heat probably won't bother you too much. August is far from the hottest time of the year, but it could be quite rainy. The rain comes and goes. It clears the air and cools it down a bit.

I can help with food. Our little site will give you plenty of suggestions.

MBK Center is the grand daddy of BKK shopping centers. It contains 6 floors of shops and stalls to examine. One can easily spend a day here.

MBK's 6th floor also has a traditional Thai food court. I recommend "Moslem" rice with chicken from stall C-21.

All along Rama I, east from MBK, is tons of shopping. Siam Square is an area on the same side as MBK. Across Rama I starts with Siam Discovery, then Siam Center and Siam Paragon. Continue east a little ways and you'll find CentralWorld, another huge shopping Center.

North from CentralWorld, you will find Pratunam Wholesale district. This is a good place to buy clothing in bulk. They don't bargain much until you hit 3, 6 or more items.

Soi Lalaisap is an easily accessible Thai marketplace. During the week, it is packed with office workers spending their cash during their lunch breaks.

check out D&D on Khao San Road...its like a budget hotel, an upgrade from a hostel but not that expensive

The Suk 11 hostel on Sukhumvit Soi 11 is an old favourite. They have some nice AC rooms and it is well-located for the Skytrain and shopping centres.

I found the food court at the Emporium Mall(on BTS line) to be really good and cheap. At the time(04) you could eat for less than a dollar for a good size meal.

The New Joe Guest house is rad and has a great little restaurant on the first floor. It is behind KSR so you can get some sleep at night and they have clean, a/c, in suite(bathroom/shower) rooms for less than $10-$15 a night depending on size.

These all seem like very good ideas and I can't wait to go to that food court, but isn't Kao San Road a very touristy area?

I haven't mentioned this before, but this is for our Honeymoon. So we're willing to spend a bit on our first few nights, but it's most important that we have a nice place for a nice price. Not an Amazing place - I'm never too comfortable in formal hotels.

Most of our trips, we wander around cities, we do day hikes and check out interesting sites or just get lost in the neighborhoods and we usually go to thrift or charity shops and food markets. Whatever kind of tourism that is, it's ours.

That said, the New Joe may do the trick. We'll only be there for a few days.

yeah the suk 11 guest house is great.

there's good food wherever you go. make sure you do what the locals do and eat on the street. follow the crowd for good food!
