Yup, 36 hrs...that's what you get when you book a last minute award ticket!

Anyway, what's a good "itinerary" for 36 hours in seoul? And where should I stay that's cheap and convenient?

Thanks!
Ian

I stayed in Itaewon, at the Itaewon motel. I don't remember the price, but it was reasonable, and near the Itaewon metro station.

A trip to the DMZ is really really interesting. I believe the tours run by the USO are the only ones that actually go into the conference rooms on the border. I THINK you have to reserve these a few days in advance. You should be able to find the number or website for the Seoul USO in any Korean guidebook. This will take up most of the day, and is a really worthwhile and memorable tour.

Scroll down to the "Misc Tour Information" section here for the tour info.

Also, the royal palaces are neat. A little underwhelming if you're coming from China, but there's a free English language tour.

Seoul's a good place to just walk around one of the shopping districts, graze on snack food, drink overpriced coffee in wacky Korean cafe, and just people watch.

Itaewon is the area just outside the U.S. Army post in Seoul. There are many of the western restaurants, tourist shops and things like that. I personally prefer other areas of Seoul. The subway system there is really simple and efficient. There's also a bus that takes a couple of different routes around the city. You can get on and off as you like at most of the major tourist sites and neighborhoods around town. It is usually not that busy and isn't too expensive, maybe 10-15USD for both routes, though I can't remember exactly. They have a website too that lists all the info and the top attractions to see. Message me if you can't find the site, I can probably dig it up. Have a great time!

Thanks for the tips!
I just booked a hostel that's supposedly near downtown. I guess I'll take a "limosine bus" from the airport to the hostel.
