We are flying into LP from Hanoi, and planning day trips from this as base for maybe 4 days. We will then travel to Vientiane, spend 2 days there and fly out to Hanoi.I have read suggestions here and elsewhere recommending the VIP bus trip between V and LP, but it's a long time on a bus. Another idea seems to be go via Phonasavan, visit the Plain of Jars with an overnighter, and then travel on.
I am open to suggestions on the route and we can start at V and leave via LP.
Ideas please.

To be honest Woylie, I think your timeline is a bit tight to include the plain of jars - and there's no other reason for going to Phonsovan. Planes don't fly there every day anyway so planning it would be a bit of a nightmare. 4 days is fine for LP - there's plenty there to keep you busy. Given that you have so little time I agree with you that flying to Vientiane is your best bet. Yes, the bus ride is good and you can stop in Vang Vieng and see some amazing limestone caves but not in the time you've got available. You'll only have 2 days in vientiane after all.

If you need any information feel free to ask.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for that- I was doubtful about the travel time taken to go to Phonsovan. Just feeling a bit reluctant to fly when there is decent bus between LP and V. And I hate that hassle getting to airports in time to wait around.
Might have to enjoy the jars from photos instead - or maybe next time Smile
I have to confess on Australian distances it looked like a day trip from LP! until I read a few useful posts here.
