is this possible? I've been thinking about spending a few months (2-3) by the beach, but I also need internet access for work purposes. I have this idea of being _right_ on the beach, - how much would something like this cost, rent wise?
Any beaches that are recommended? I hear Phuket a lot. |

I tend to think that "hut" and ADSL don't go well together. But that is assuming you want the Internet IN your hut.
A nicer home - no problem. I have ADSL in my "hut" but it is 500 meters from the beach and is quite nice. On Phuket you can expect to pay anywhere from B5,000 to 100,000 depending on how nice you want to get. But, more realistically - B10,000 to 20,000 will get you close to the beach in a decent house with a phone line (phone lines are hard to come by in less expensive homes). Renting for a short time though - often doubles or even triples the rental rates for many places. A year's lease is pretty standard here. However, if you hunt your place in off season - bargains can be found. I like the beaches away form the tourist areas. On Phuket the farther north you go - the fewer the tourists -and the less the development. You might even want to take a look at somewhere like Khao Lak (on the mainland - up the coast an hour). |

I'm in Phuket at the moment. I kind of accidentally discovered this little area called Kata. I was looking for another place but had the tuk tuk driver drop me here and now 5 days later i'm pretty happy. I've been renting a room for about 400B/night and it's about 10 steps from an internet cafe that charges 1B/minute. It's an absolutely great place. I can walk down to the water in less than 2 minutes, and it's probably not even that long. It's the low season at the moment so it's very quiet, which for me is good. I haven't seen hardly any other backpackers here. It's a really nice place and I highly recommend it. Stay away from Patong and some of the other touristy places. I think if you plan on staying a month you can always negotiate a deal and pay alot less per night.

I really need something (a house, a room) with a high speed internet connection. Obviously in Thailand this isn't as available, but any idea if it's possible at all?
I reckon at least a phone line for dial up , and then a cybercafe down the street might work as well (provided they let you hook up your own laptop to their network). |

I never found a place in Thailand that would not let me hook up to their network with my laptop. Maybe a quarter had wireless. The speeds in cafes were better in the morning and into the early afternoon...after that things would slow down.
I don't think you are likely to find fast access in a 'hut by the beach'...only the more expensive hotels. ______________________________________________________________________ "You weren't half as weird as I expected." -- skobb |
