My wife and I are planning to travel Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand for a month. Any ideas on how much we should budget, also some suggestions on places to chill in Malaysia and Thailand would be appreciated.

Travelling through SE Asia, India,Nepal and Europe on the way back. Jan 15 to June 30. Would be cool to hook up with other travellers/locals in the region.

We are doing the hike to Mt Everest base camp (Kalapathhar) from Lukla anyone done that before. How difficult is the hike.

No replies yet - no wonder - big question requires PAGES of replies.
We've been here before by the way but as a general guide, i'll say Sing is the most expensive of all the countries there.
However, as 24 hours is too long to spend in Sing, the good news is that it gets cheaper the further north.
Malaysia will cost you from US$50 upwards per day (for all of you) or less if you like roughing it and doing what the loacals do.
A 6 course meal for US$2 each and you may not need another feed.
Eat local and stay away from 5 star hotels and you can do it cheaper. Thai, and others are much cheaper.
Welcome to Eden.

Have campervan, will travel.

Let me get to where you might wanna go in Malaysia. Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Penang, Langkawi (for duty free boozing), Taman Negara (National Forest).. I skipped the coral islands.. Best you go for those in Thailand..
Malacca - That's where our 'history' started. Portuguese, Dutch, English influence (or so said).

KL - whatever

Ipoh - food, cave temples and etc

Penang - nice sites and food which isn't all that. over-hyped

Langkawi - duty free island

Taman negara - forest. which i heard is kinda cool if u like green...

and again my offer, fireflies. That would be Kuala Selangor.

If you're taking the bus/train up to Thailand, you might wanna stop by Alor Setar. Nice place..

Yes acclimatizing is very important. We will have a guide who will book our tickets from Kathmandu to Lukla. We will reach Kathmandu end of March. Our paths might cross.

Sleepy, what is your offer on fireflies? We will be doing Malacca, KL and Penang on our way to Thailand. Not too excited about Penang, so if there is anyother place on the way to Thailand, we would be up for it. Taking the Bus mostly. Thanks for all the info

I don't get it.. What do you mean by what's my offer?

Fireflies is a half hour activity. About 40 minutes of driving from KL to Kuala Selangor.. If you're into bird watching, there's a place for that... So really, just put aside one night for it. And I won't be home till 24th, and best we go on 25th. That's the earliest I can 'offer'... But we might have to do the dinner somewhere else cause the restaurant operators should still be gambling at home (one of Chinese New Year activity).

I would be excited bout Penang. Sightseeing is cool! Which other state offer you free bus ride around town? I liked the sight-seeing. It's overhyped for the food that's for sure, but I'd love to go back there and walk around. Cheap stuff too.. But you're going to Thailand so no point shopping much in Malaysia.. Take the Konsortium bus. It's red in colour, it cost bout 22 bucks per person, nice comfy seats. It don't get any better!

If it's your first time in Malaysia, I guess you should do Penang. It's a bigger version of Malacca, and since you're going on weekdays right after Chinese New Year, it should be good. If you go during Chinese New Year, you would hate the Chinese. hehehehehe Penang ain't the place to go for Chinese New Year unless that's your hometown.

If you get bored of Penang, take a ferry and hop over to Langkawi for some... some... uhhh..... expensive resort?.... and uh.. 1 ringgit beers?

Cameron Highlands is on your way up North (tea plantation, Tudor styled houses, cottages, vege farms).

Oh well, leave the smaller towns for your next visit...

Bus is good... Take Konsortium www.supercoach.com.my

Fireflies - we'll use my car. Don't worry bout it, just tell me when is best to go. After 24th that is..

Here's for your ref.

BTW our budget is around $15 USD for accomodation. We are mainly looking at hostels. Since we will be travelling for 7 months we cant afford to be too lavish.

So can we do the fireflies on the 21. If not maybe we can on the way back from Thailand. Any suggestions of places thats not expensive.

Are you looking at Kancil Guest House?
It looks like it's down the road from Convent School, so it is walking distance to St Paul Hill (main area).

I usually only stay a night... Maybe cause I go there to eat and sleep mostly...

2 nights would be good... minimum... Be in KL on the 21st, Chinese New Year's eve, it'll be nice.

I can't promise you fireflies on 21st, we have reunion dinner on New Year's eve.. My family usually have lunch, but this coming year, I'm not too sure.

I thought you're heading North, why would you come back to Malaysia after Thailand?

I'll check out for the public open house for Chinese New year in KL for you.. It'll be fun..

USD 15 for a room yea? I'll go check.

Yeah I booked Kancil guest house. Unfortunately if we stay 2 nights at Melacca then we will reach KL only on the 22, which is what we will do. Will stay in KL for 4 days so we will be around on the 25, guess we can do the fireflies on the 25.

Thanks for all the info. You have been very helpful

If that's how it has to be, you better spend 3 nights in Malacca, no point being in a quiet and empty KL for 4 nights.

OR You could drop by for a night in Seremban.. It's between Malacca & KL, ogb4619 could show you some... banana leaf..? From Seremban you can take the komuter train to KL. That's really simple.. I used to take quite often.

So you will be leaving KL on the 26th? for Penang?

That sounds like a good plan, We might do that and reach KL a day later.

Yeah we will leave KL to Penang (Most likely). We are not making any bookings just going where the wind takes us.

We'd be glad to help out too.
Seremban is 1 1/2 hours north of Melaka (Malacca) and 1 hour south of KL.
However, i have to admit that there's not much here to do or see.
It's a quiet "country town".
As Sleepy says, Melaka is the most interesting tourist spot in Malaysia and is worth spending more time there than anywhere else (except KL) in Malaysia.

Penang is a bit overrated, i agree too, but nonetheless, is worth a visit.
The traffic is murder but what isn't in Asia.!?

If you're planning to come here, email me and we'll offer a typical Indian lunch in the best Indian restoran in Seremban.
