I'm going to be in HK on October 6, the date of this year's mid-autumn festival, or the Moon Cake festival. Wondering if anyone knows what's going on this day/eve... what should we plan not to miss? Where should we be to take full advantage of the festivities?

Hard to know whats on this year as it co-incides with Chinese National holiday (October 1 is national day) There will be plenty happening in Hong Kong. I did a quick look on the net and there seems a fair bit. When you get to Hong Kong there will be plenty of visitor info at the airport.
You should have a great time as the weather has cooled off a little. Its now 28 to 30C maximums so it is pleasant to walk around.

Hi Cheryn,

Traditionally (in the long-gone farming days in southern china) people celebrate harvest in mid-autumn festival. It lies on a day of full moon (hence the egg-yolk in moon cake). Usually it's in September but there is a leap month in the lunar calendar this year, hence the delay.

In modern times, it has become a time for family get-together. We will have a little feast for dinner, then families with children will head to parks to chill out (summer heat will have cooled down a bit in oct), have moon cakes and grapefruit and other snacks, and most importantly light up lanterns.

It's good that you will be in HK for Mid-autumn. Definitely go to Victoria Park (or other urban parks) in the evening where you will see lots of lanterns (with candles or light bulbs!). Talk to some locals and surely they will share moon cakes and snacks with you.

If you want to buy some mooncakes, go to some traditional bakery chains (e.g. Kee Wah, Wing Wah, Maxim). The most original ones in hk are egg-yolks in lotus-seeds, but there are many varieties one of which will suit your taste.

welcome to hk

wyue.

I think the moon cake festival for most chinese people just it is the time to come back home(hometown) and meet their family member, maybe have a party and enjoy the meal and moon cake under moon.
