Question:
Back in the 60's there was a lot of late nights spent over discussing the big questions like...who am I....What am I? ...and what do you make of this trip we're on?...ie...life and our place in the universe? Has this era come and gone or is it possible there is some 'seekers' out there today?

[This message was edited by oldhippy on 07 January 2001 at 11:41.]

Choices:
I personally feel that after years as a seeker I've come full circle on learning to accept, rather than still questioning life, but I'm interested in what you think!
I have lots of friends who discuss this stuff! It is a hot topic today as well!
I am interested in it, but don't have many folks to discuss it with
I am only interested in making a buck, and having a good time!
You old hippies are far out man! Go smoke another doobie !

What started as a world wide search for purpose and meaning in life, has brought me back to where I started....Seek and ye shall find....but the answer lies within! The truth is out there....yes, but it's in there too!Know Thyself! What started as a quest with a 1000 questions, ends with only answers....Peace and Love, oldhippy!

Hi OldHippy,

I used to go to Dead shows and get into discussing alternatives to what society was offering. I think I was more simplistic then and didn't fully understand the whole picture ( still don't ). When a person is into spirituality, recycling, new age stuff etc its easy to think that the World is heading in that direction. A trip to Asia or Europe will dispell that idea. Most people are too concerned with their own lives and how to make a living.

Instead of hoping that the World will change into some kind of paradise I'm more interested in contributing to a healthy direction for my friends, family and those I come into contact with. That is, I think the Chinese version of Buddhism, complete association with the World, is more suited to me than the Indian, complete disassociation. I think I can make more good changes and be a better influence by working hard everyday on things that are important rather than sitting in my room and meditating.

I do think there is a certain selfishness with some people of course. The older generation used to judge people by factors not under their control, race, age, sex, nationality etc. The yuppy generation doesn't do that so much, which is good, but they've replaced it with judging people by income and status...........which kind of sucks too. I mean I don't feel my worth as a human is based on how many $$$ I can earn.

So I think there are many folks who do still think of the questions you brought up and there are also people who don't care

Life is like a banana......crooked, tasty and messy at both ends.

Hello Ol' Hippy:

You pose an interesting question. I rather suspect that for most people (depending on which country you will receive responses such as yours) that their answers might become more closely associated with---I don't have the time to go into the metaphysical aspects of life, I have to keep focussed (spelling?)on my day to day life etc.

For myself the following dictums apply:

1. Adventure is the essence of life. The higher the climb the better the view.

2. We die from lack of love, not from lack of sex.

And so it goes.....

Nessral,

I love this..especially number 2...
1. Adventure is the essence of life. The higher the climb the better the view.

2. We die from lack of love, not from lack of sex.

Number 2 just seemed so damn funny to me when I read it, maybe cuz we are always seeing on Tv and crap on the bs, all the sex and like it(being sex) is what's neccessary for happiness.

Where am I going with this...not sure..just thought it was funny and nice one! Thanks for sharing

Hmm, food for thought eh. When I was younger I did spend time searching for the "meaning of life" - now many years later with 4 adult children - I still don't have the answers. I am sure they do not sit and question this as I and my peers once did.

I have travelled and explored and opened my mind, but apart from accepting that there probably is no answer, I live life to the full, ensuring that those I meet along my path are treated with the love and respect I would wish to be treated. One can do no more...

Peace

One of my favorite tools was keeping a journal. If I was to post a format/plan for a 'Seekers Of The Truth' handbook or journal, for each individual to fill out,on their own, would there be an interest in this? There is no charge for this of course, because the truth is for free! The only investment is the individuals intent, and supreme desire to master the task at hand! [I set em up...you knock em down!]If you are interested in dialog, leave a post with your interest, or e-mail: oldhippy11111111@aol.com

Ok! I'll always try to keep one step ahead of you. The process at first will include you taking a personal inventory. You can do it in a spiral notebook or if you do it on your computer, I may be able to give you direct feedback, or see trends, if you should choose to share your insights. Either way, it's your choice! By keeping separate pages for each assignment, you can jump around, to keep it interesting. Do as much as you feel like...shine it on for a while, and come back to it as new insights come to light. If you wonder why put the info. down on paper, it is to clear up brain space."Too much junk clutters the mind!" Once you are clear on who you are, you don't need to think about it as much anymore. This leaves you more open to ponder the bigger questions, unencumbered by the self! To become one with the universe, you first must become one with your self! ......and the journey begins........

Subj: Seekers Guide To The Universe...all you need is a spiral notebook and a true desire!

To Become One With The Universe, we must first learn to become selfless To Become Selfless, We First Must Discover Our Self!

The goal of this guide is to give yourself a closer look at your life in relationship to the rest of the universe. It is not meant to do the hard work for you, but rather to give you a forum to explore yourself. I cannot change what it is that you like, or don't like about yourself, but you can! You can seek more of what gives you joy, and let go of that which holds you down. Look at my role here as a guide or facilitator [helper]...someone who has been down this road before you. The good news to report is I once came from a place of 1000 questions, and now life seems to have nothing but answers. There is peace in knowing, you are one with the universe...after all, we all came from the same place!.....Space...the final frontier! Getting it together is organizing the space that lies in your brain. Open your mind and look inside!

[1] You are the sum total of all your relationships. Everyone you have ever known has played a hand in who you are. Some more, some less. Some people have had a good influence on you, and some have caused you grief. The first goal is to list everyone who has touched your life in either capacity. Simply create two lists....one for positive influences, and one for negative influences. If someone you know has played both roles in your life, list them on both! Next to their name give a line or two, or three...on what it was that put them on that particular list. Include everyone you can remember....parents siblings teachers, preachers, friends bullies, relatives, neighbors...even if someone just briefly touched your life in a significant way. Someone who was nice to you, or did you a good turn. Someone who was mean, or caused you pain. This is simply meant to explore your relationships, and to get clear with what your feelings are about those who have touched your life. If you should hit the mother load of emotion over any one on that list, give them a page!  A small essay might be in order. Try to keep your lists balanced, that is... look for traits from both sides. If everyone you know has caused you pain...take a close look at that! What do you think that means? To review, list person, list image recall, list emotion you have for this person! Take your time, you can always add more as the images come up...just go from what you know!
[2] You are the sum total of what you like and what you don't like. If you have a hard time making decisions this simple inventory list is just for you. A lot of grief in life comes from doing what you don't want to do, or not knowing what it is you do want to do! This goal of this list is to turn your likes and dislikes into allies instead of obstacles to your peace of mind and sense of joy in your life! The first part of life we are mostly told what to do and how to do it! You should do this....you should do that.....and some of it in our own minds is just a load of crap! We do a lot of what we don't like to do for a lot of different reasons....brushing your teeth will save them for later in life...exercise is a drag, but if you don't use it, you'll lose it... but when others dictate what we should or should not like....that is something else! With so much going on in life you'd be surprised how many folks never stopped to take inventory of what it is they do and don't like. You my friend will be miles ahead by taking a moment to think about it! List everything you like on one page, [call it Likes], and everything you don't on another,[call it Don't Like, or Dislikes]. Leave no stone unturned. Lists should include your greatest loves to your smallest pet peeves. There is no need to rank the items on your list at this point, just let er rip! Ok....you can say I love chocolate or I hate liver, but all we need right now is to list.....I like this!... I don't like that! Do as much as you want at one sitting, and fill in more as they surface. Our goal when complete is to have a pretty clear idea of what you like and don't like in your life at this moment in time. From this list we will glean more insights down the road.

[3] You are the sum total of your hopes, wants desires and your fears. Ok, now were getting heavy! This is a fun assignment, because you get to use your creativity, your imagination, and your intuition. Most folks who don't know what they want out of life, have never really taken enough time to think about it. Start by simply listing everything you would like to do in this life time. List every dream, wish, fantasy, hope, goal, desire, want...you name it! Even if you think it is not physically possible, list it! The only criteria here is you think it might be fun, or interesting, or adventurous, or fulfilling! If it even seems like you might be just a little bit interested in something...write it down! Include everything you'd like to learn, see.do.visit,be,experience....you name it...write it down. Don't be concerned with priorities with this list, we'll edit it later. Just dredge yourself of all your fancies, all your fantasies! If, while you are out in the world, your read something, or see something, make a note of your potential interest, and write it down! For the other side of this assignment, list your fears, concerns, trepidation's, limitations, handy-caps, doubts, insecurities, basicly everything you can think of that is a limiting factor in your thinking process. This may be a hard assignment, but it may be easy. Are you an optimist or a pessimist? If at any time you run into heavy emotions over this, take a look at what the feeling is that has come up, and then start a separate sheet, first identifying the emotion...and what you might imagine is the reason for it raising its head.

[example]: "I am feeling scared....I am feeling scared because I am alone...I'm scared when I'm alone, because I have not found anything that can protect me from feeling lonely. I have not learned any skills for dealing with loneliness. I need to call upon an energy greater than myself to combat this feeling. I need to be able to better deal with my feelings of aloneness"....This process is called working through an emotion, because all emotions are clues to what we need to deal with in our life. The good news is that we have a limited amount of emotions, so dealing with them is just a matter of taking care of them, as they present a learning opportunity! That is why, any time an emotion pops up, write it down...I am feeling....I think I am feeling....because.....[use your imagination here]. Just keep writing thru it, until you get a little more clarity, or until you get fed up enough with it, that you want to take physical action to change it! We are creatures of comfort. If we didn't have hard times, we would have no reason to change or grow!!!!!! Look at every negative thing in our life as a learning opportunity...to break on thru to the other side! Rise above it, and feel no pain!!!!

Start with these....and we'll have more assignments to follow. DO! Make a mental note if some items are harder or easier for you to do. Sometimes, these are links to learning opportunities. Always, write with any questions or feedback! ........Via Con Dios! Peace and Love to you! oldhippy! oldhippy11111111@aol.com

Old Hippy,

Could you go and edit your post here by entering paragraphs breaks...it is tough to read since it is one big paragraph. Please?

Thanks

Even the word< Oldhippy > still draws me, the innocence of the time, the many hopes and dreams, the stretch to understand and realize.

Altho the innocence is gone, hopes and dreams still are there, a little changed, a little more mature, and the need to understand isnt there so much, as the acceptance of life, the aw.....

And I too really appreciated #2, not enough love shared and sex isnt the answer
Altho it was fun:)

I admire people who can say a lot in very few words... I can express myself quite well in writing, but being brief and to the point is forever a challenge for me!

I must bow respectfully to Nessral for sharing his insight so clearly:

"1. Adventure is the essence of life. The higher the climb the better the view.

2. We die from lack of love, not from lack of sex.

And so it goes..... "

I join previous commentors in flaunting my editorial rights by moving comment #2 to the top of the list, probably because of the relative weight of personal life experiences.

I might add a reminder that the potential for adventure lies in even the smallest of actions, tasks and experiences - limited only by our own perceptions.

May we all continue to climb, and appreciate the rewards of our inclination to seek the view.

Hello Old Hippy... Lisa here..
It is Sunday night.. tomorrow is probably the last day at work for me before my quest for a new life begins.

The subject title came out of reality.. I read with interest (although too much to read at this hour and in one sitting) with interest. it was the when we question.. have we all questioned .. etc etc.. why are we here.. the poll ... the lists...I am not an old hippy.. (born 1962).. am a believer in as much as when i become more spiritual within myself i meet/bumpinto more spiritual people..

This in turn gives rise to the overall feeling that the world is becoming a better place... like associates with like etc.

I have a friend who in her own description would say 'she is a traveller' she travels.. she travels with the 'rainbow people' and she 'believes'. she returns to her mum in council accomodation in Liverpool and cant understand that she has to pay electricity bills. Big up the rainbow people.

She has been my friend for many many years.. but I realised a couple of years ago with all her good vibes and intentions.. I am more her friend because i live in London and am accessible to Heathrow airport. Big up the Rainbow!

In the last five years she has had a partner... they do the Rainbow together now.. i have not seen her very much!!!

I see the anti road brigade up in Tottenham shrieking down with cars! I am a single working mum who's life would be so much harder without a car, caught up in the mayhem .. but still agree with them in principle.

I bought a house.. not because i wanted to be a homeOWNER... i just wanted another bedroom so i could have some sex and a garden so my small child could play in it!!

I am now selling that same house.. and with the profit am travelling the world with my small child (seven on Monday).. for a year at least..

and all of this got me thinking ... WHY AM I DOING THIS!!!?? and the only answer i can give is ...the world is a big place. and life is a journey... the TRAVEL part of it is just a small element..

I cant get into writing to your logic.. i have to have mine own... I lost it on the people who have touched our lives part really i suppose.. (hence i started to write this)... because all i could then think was about... People who's life I have touched...

What makes us who we are? and Who makes us what we want to become? the questions go on forever... regardless..

lisa

p.s i apologise to the world for being part of others tradegies.

Yes, I'm interested. Have been for sometime. But unlike any other travels this one is a solo trip. People can give you suggestions or offer thoughts on their OWN inward journey but this is a trip alone. It has all of the features of a real trip, cost, fears, excitment.

I can't speak for men, but so many women in their 40's are just beginning to rediscover who they are. It can be the most beautiful enriching trip ever. To reconnect to your inner self.

Others may consider you selfish but for the first time for many women...its an "I" thing.

Ladies, embrace the desire, go for it, and discover the uniqueness of yourself.

P.S. Husbands sure you can take this journey..after your wives come back from their trip (someone has to watch the children :-)

People have been searching and asking these 'meaning of life'questions for thousands of years, and it is not that the answers aren't out there, but that there are so many answers. We each have to find the answers that make sense to us. It's a long search, and it is largely an 'inside job', but to be exposed to the range of answers you may need to get out of your narrow world. That is why travelling becomes so important in this journey - it exposes you to a much wider range of possible answers, and shows you why they might be more plausible than the ones you have been exposed to. The end result for me was 'peace of mind' and serenity that had always eluded me, and that I envied so much in others I met. Our usual searches for money/recognition/power seem ludicrous in comparison.

I am sure those questions have been around since the dawn of time , I also have asked my self theses questions, but as I grow I find myself asking , what is more important where I came from or what changes for the better I can make while I am here.
