I read that the old hippy trail basicly died after an early 1970's Afghan coup, by a new regime that didnt tolerate any of the heroin hippy crap and basicly banned travellers from using the Khyber Pass into Pakistan.

So considering the war zone that the Khyber Pass and the Afghan\Pakistan border in general has become today, I dont know if it would be wise to attempt to spark a revival of the old hippy trail.

But of course if you know what you are doing, or travel with someone who does, and are willing to take the risk, then I say go for it.

But you were just asking if anyone had done it, not saying that you were planning on it.

Are you thinking about it?

No, I am not thinking of attempting it. I think that would be awesome to do. I find things like the hippie trail and the Silk Road fascinate me. I would just like to hear some stories.

Hi Alex,
Just saw the postings and I can say I did this trail in the 1971 time period. Was in Europe and Greece and spent winter 70 / spring 71 in Israel on a Kibbutz. When spring 71 came I flew up to Istanbul and headed east into Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and up to Nepal. I think the entire cost from Istanbul to New Delhi was 30 dollars. Mainly buses. After Nepal back into India and kept going east into South East Asia and still kept going east. So did the "hippy trail", although this is the first time I have heard it called that ( I must be out of the loop on this). I have some stories of this adventure, for example a highlight was going into the Taj Mahal in the evening with two friends and having the Taj Mahal to ourselves to explore. No one else around and that was a highlight for sure.

on this note, i'd just like to voice my displeasure at the state of things in the middle east right now, mostly due to "our" commander-in-chief, Dubya.
there are so many wonderful things in that region of the world, ancient fortesses in Iran, the Silk Road thru Afghanistan/Pakistan, etc., that I will probably never get to see.
Thanks alot Dubya! F*cker!!!

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.
