The Four Agreements is a book by Don Miguel Ruiz. He's a Toltec Central American and shares some of there wisdom. It has the simplest concepts, but it's helped everyone I know. It's a short read (like 100 pages), but useful in everyday life. The agreements are: Be impeccable with your word - Don't take anything personally - Don't make assumpions - Always do your best. Anyone read it?

Hey Bear
Sounds interesting this work, pretty much upmy alley.Any idea if its available somewhere on the net or someplace i could ftp it from ?
If i am getting your taste in reading right you could go for carlos casatenadas "Teachings of Don Juan: a Yaqui way of life".Its about a student of anthropology at Princeton(? not sure) who meets a yaqui witch doctor called Don Juuan fir some project of his .Well he eventually becomes Don Juans disciple and trsins to become a witch docotr himself. Some of his experinces on the way are quite intense. While some have dismissed this work as fraud, I would say you read it and finsd out for yourself

Just bought it on Amazon.com.....sounds like it's right inline with my philosophy on life and latest reading interests:

- The Experience of Insight: A Simple and Direct Guide to Buddhist Meditation by Joseph Goldstein
- The Bhagavad Gita: According to Gandhi
- Present Moment Wonderful Moment: Mindfulness Verses for Daily Living by Thich Nhat Hanh

Smile I'll let you know what I think of it!

The Famous Grouse, I see that you are from India and prob Calcutta. A friend of mine had picked this book up from Strand Book shop in Mumbai. I dont know whether Strand has a branch in your city. But I am sure a local bookstore will be able to order it for you, it is quite a popular book.

I have read it and found it to be a great and uplifting book. Whoever lives by the 4 Agreements will definitely be better off for it. I recently bought it for a friend who tried to commit suicide, and I hope that he will read it and absorb at least some of the message.

Many of us have many deeply ingrained self-destructive thoughts and reactions to certain situations. I would highly recommend THe Four Agreements to anyone who is interested in ridding themselves of some of their negative thought processes. Don't we all need that?

The book should be available in any good bookstore, at least in the English speaking countries, and you can most definitely find it online for a good price.

read the first three castaneda books and then attempt to tackle "the art of dreaming" you'll learn a lot more than reading the four agreement books, let me tell you that much... Wink

I actually have not read this book, but have heard good things. Along similar lines, I would highly recommend The Travelers Gift, particularly if you feel a bit in a rut. It is some of the most impacting rules to live by presented in a creative and powerful way. Check it out. Also, while on a little different wavelength, The Alchemist is outstanding. Hope someone reads this and decides to pick one of them up...

I'm putting it on my list too.

But about Castaneda... If anyone is interested in those books, I recommend going through them in order. Part of my appreciation for them is watching the authors thinking and processes change as the books progress. And understanding how the author understands what he's going through was instrumental in understanding what was being taught.

The fact that you say Don Miguel Ruiz is Toltec perked my ears, as that's a culture discussed in Castaneda's books.

You should read "The Gardener"

You should try to get your hand on this book, written by a spanish writer called Grian. The book consists of short stories of about one page, allthough in a order.

The book is filled with words of breattaking logical wisdom, and is non-religious.

You can find more info at Amazon
