A Refuge of the Hyborian Age

Let me set the scene.
-It's the winter of your life and your old enough so that you can't go and see the world anymore. But not so old that you need Darth Vader life support. It's a hoilday of some sort the kind that brings all of your family around you. Your telling a story to your younger relitives, The ones that only of you has old. What do you want to tell them so that they remember you and tell your story(ies) to their kids.

E.

I don't want to necessarily be remembered unless I paint another Sistine Chapel or cure cancer.
I'd probably tell them to take risks - travel when you can, tell someone if you find them attractive, say truthful things and don't get trapped by the everyday.

It was the Summer of 'ought 2' I was walking down Bourbon St., eating a vanilla ice-cream cone and these two hot Latino guys were giving me the eye....wait...no not that story. Ummmm... well...there was the time that I went to the Naval Academy on a group tour and...no...not that one either.
But seriously.....I guess I'd tell the younger ones to always do what they dream and not to wait for others to justify or approve of the dreams they may have. Youhave to do what you dream and you must always listen to your heart on stuff like that. Be sensible, but stick to your guns. I'd tell the older ones the biggest bunch of made-up Alan Quartermain size lies that my wicked and crafty old brain could concoct, cause they were the ones who told me NOT to travel or take chances.

I'd only want them to remember me if it brought back good feelings. So if I played my cards right I'd be happy at the end of it all, and being remembered would just a freebie.

I'd say:

"Live your life on your terms. Forget what people are telling you you need. You don't need a college degree, you don't need a 401k, you don't need a car, house or 1.5 children. You don't need to travel and you don't need to learn how to add or subtract.
What you need to do is find out what you want. Then from there you can learn everything that will help you achieve it. And what you want can change. Maybe now you want to hike the Andes and tomarrow you want to teach your daughter to ride a bicycle. That's okay. Just never stop wanting something more.
Don't compare your realtionships to other peoples. If it feels right to you, then it is. And if it feels wrong to you then the same applies. Stop worring about what makeup, shoes, pants, shirts, or sunglasses are instyle. If you want to wear uggs in July then damnit wear uggs is July. Otherwise you'll find you're at deaths door and never really figured out what life meant to you.

And on my tombstone write this: Ouch asshole! Where are your manners? Get off my head and thanks for the flowers.

What Prisa said. Smile

I would emphasize to not listen to the 'should' voices in your head...rather, to listen to the wants and desires and hopes and dreams.

At the same time, recognize the things that will bring about your hopes and dreams. These things might not be much fun, and they might not be something you want to do, but if they ultimately lead you to where you want to be, then please go through the temporary unpleasantness.

I think life is a complicated mix of living in the moment and looking far ahead, and going through things you don't really want to do, to make things better in the long run. Just make sure everything you do is following your heart, and really try to figure out what YOU WANT in life.

And finally, don't feel obligated to do anything for a company (my personal spiel). At the end of your life, the work thing isn't going to mean shit, because it's not where life actually happens. I keep thinking about this more and more...you're only alive once. Don't sweat the trivialities. (is that a word?? :-) They are absolutely unimportant in the grand scheme.

Let's see, it is the summer of my life right now, and I am just beginning to learn about my whole being as something that can be tuned into its full potential....so, I will definitely not allow myself to be "too old to see the world anymore".

I won't tell them much, except maybe wow them or challenge them to some impossible physical stunt....

Have to echo Borderland ... unless I'm discovering a cure for cancer, AIDS or ending world hunger, it's safe to say that any recollection of me can go the way of all flesh.

Having said the above, I do have this on my office wall:
"If you don't have good stories to tell on on your deathbed, what good was living" ... that pearl of wisdom from actress Jennifer Tilley.

But what of the other people that are in our lives? To say we should follow our wants and desires and never do what we should doesnt work for most people It's not that black and white. Most people cannot not do what they should do because they have those who are dependent on them, they have responsibilty. We need to do what is best for our lives. To perhaps give up that dream of travelling round the world for a year to allow our child to attend school. We have to incorprate our wants and desires with that which we should and do what is best for our lives as a whole. And those in it as well as ourself.
