I am trying to find a cheap round trip flight to London from NYC or Washington DC in March. I am new to this whole international flight thing, and I'm not sure what the average cost is or where I should be looking.
Does anyone have recommendations on what sites/airlines I can try to get a good deal? I would ideally like to find something that is under $500 after taxes... |

I recommend that you get on the "email specials" mailing list from the airlines yourself. The most fun is on Virgin Atlantic. The least would be on Northwest, amongst the US airlines anyway. If you fly domestically regularly, choose an airline that is partnered with your regular airline. Icelandic Air has good deals regularly, but my best advice is to wait until after Xmas and see what BA and Virgin has.
Other than that, these sites are amongst my current favorites: Vayama Kayak Mobissimo Travelocity |

try Zoom its the low cost transatlantic flight - it does depend on how flexible you are with dates but prices in march look to be around that $500 mark. you pick each leg of journey and then it adds on the tax and supplements,
I flew with them from london to halifax and found the experience very good. Michelle |

United and American both have had killer sales to Germany from the US. Book a flight on a big ol' airline to Germany, then grab an el cheapo carrier back over the channel to the UK. Might work for other cities in Europe as well.
One funky thing that "raises" London fares are the "depature taxes" for flights leaving the UK....often these are a LOT more than one would imagine. One workaround is to book a flight to London, then from, say, Germany with your big ol' airline. Then, book some el cheapo low-cost-carrier flight from Germany back to London. March sees school holiday breaks over several weeks, and more countries than just the U.S. Not surprising that low fares for this time frame are snagged. Probably some still out there, but as you're finding, it may take some digging. The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page. ---St. Augustine |
