Hmmmm.....depends on where you are.

Asda IS probably the cheapest out of Sainsburys, Tesco's and Waitrose (dont go to Waitrose, it's hideously expensive).

I'm not sure if these count as Supermarkets...but Lidl's and Aldi's are very very cheap if you can find somewhere that has them...

Tescos are everywhere and even the little ones are cheap. Your chances of finding an ASDA are pretty slim unless you have a car.

Lidl, Aldi and Nettos are horrible, chav infested dumps.

Depends where you will be. Asda is probably the cheapest supermarket although Tesco claim to be - both can be reached on foot in some locations but also have 'out of town' superstores.

Lidl certainly in the South (and Farm Stores) are good cheap alternatives if you are not brand-tied but won't stock everything.

Asda is definitely the cheapest of the supermarkets, but I would think carefully about buying their veg if you have any interest in your health. Its a little more time consuming, but the average street market will have a fruit and veg man whose produce is not only cheaper, but better quality that the over ripe, maggot infested, slightly rotten Asda affairs.

Street market? Cleaner than ASDA? In London?

Yeah alright then mate, I don't know if you lot up north think that the streets are still paved with gold down in the smoke, but they're not. They are lined with rubbish. (How the hell does that work anyway?)

Well I guess that tells you everything you need to know! Eating food in the south can be an expensive and dismal experience. You can either give your hard-earned cash to Mr Walmart and he'll sell you substandard rubbish thats been carted all over the country from distribution company to distribution company while it slowly rots, or you can try the markets which apparently are no good!

Leave London and miss getting ripped off. Head north where the scenery is more dramatic, the people more friendly and the food both cheap and edible!!!!!

Morrisons and Tesco are pretty cheap too.
Also Somerfield have really good specials but their regular prices aren't as good.

Oh, and add Iceland to the cheap as chips but unbearably chavvy list.

Waitrose IS expensive but provides a far, far more pleasant shoppping experience. The range of food is amazing and produce is really good quality, the stores are clean, the staff are friendly and will hlep pack your bags and carry them to the car for you (on the off chance you have one). They are also recongnised as being one of the most socially responsible retailers in the UK.

The branch in Canary Wharf is my favorite; it has in-store sandwich, salad and tapas bars, plus a wine bar where you can either have a sneaky glass on your way down the beverage isle or pluck a bottle off the shelf and hunker down for the afternoon.
Whenever I'm having a "rich week" I always treat myself to a trip to my local branch.

The street markets are generally best value for fruit and veg, but if you're in the right neighbourhood you can get the most amazing stuff from ethnic groceries for much less than you would get at supermarkets.

Costcutters are everywhere, but their selection tends to be limited. Good for milk and booze though.

If you're looking for pinic food (rolls, salads etc.) Waitrose and Marks & Spencer food shops are probably your best bet. Expensive, but good fresh selection.
