Would this be a good idea ? The two of us visit London for 1 week next month. Hotel might be sufficient. But "been there". Hotels was everything from crap to nice.

Might be the time to try renting an apartment. Could not be worse than Corbigue Hotel Frown

I guess the agents get their share of the money. Any way to get straight to the houseowner ? Would 350-400£ get us a furnished apartment within reach of a tube station ?

You can try craigslist to see if you can rent someone's apartment for the time you're looking for. I don't know what they would rent for in London.

I rented my little studio in New York for a few days @ $75 per day (I was being generous) via Craigslist, so perhaps you could find that.

You can also try to do an apartment swap with someone (I also did that with a Dutch woman in Amsterdam), but swapping with someone in Scandinavia in late November might not get you many replies. If you are in a big city, perhaps you'll get lucky.

Also, as much as you can, try to use some common sense as you are making arrangements with complete strangers over the internet. Ask a lot of questions if you try this route. Both times worked out great for me when I tried it, but just be healthily cautious.
