Hello all,

I'm taking a rather drawn out route to Mexico. It should take a couple of months and I'll spend a lot of time on the bus.

I'm after a language book that will get me a head start before doing a homestay or two in Mexico. Also, I'd be interested in one with an accompanying CD that I can mp3ify and stick on my player for those half-day bus journeys.

Language learning is not my forte. I usually pick up enough to be polite and buy groceries, but – other than French (and that with the help of years at school) - I've never got past that point.

I'm hoping to do some volunteering with quetzal trekkers in Guatemala and really want to do the best job possible.

I had the same question about 2 months ago and after much searching on the web i decided to go with rocket Spanish. You can buy it on disc which is more expensive. Or you can buy it and download everything from their website and put the audio files on your mp3 player. There is also a huge amount of documentation, an interactive game and flash cards. I got it for 100 US Dollars.

I have found it very good. But you have to be willing to put in the time. I study between 1-2 hours a day and i am picking the language up easily enough. Granted it is basic enough stuff so far and is geared around tourist type encounters. But you have to start somewhere. It says there is a money back guarantee so you can always trial it.
