I did not know how to say avatar (now I do, I think), and now I have come across two versions of hostel: HOSTel (I say this) or hosTEL (weird! but maybe it's regional or I'm wrong?).

How do you say hostel?
Any other words?
Mine are:
wreak (in "wreak havoc") I wasn't sure about but I don't really say that anyway.

apostille too...

I pronounce hostel like I pronounce hostile but without out the strong "ile" at the end: HAHS-tuhl.

Wreak is REEK.

Apostille is French, so one can pronounce it in a variety of pretentious ways. Smile

I think we are saying hostel the same then ... I have heard people saying hosTELLE and thought maybe I was wrong...

But I have to say I thought it was "wreck" havoc. Someone quoted Inspector Gadget on this, so we may have to wait for the Cartoon Network to come online to confirm!

I do realize dictionaries provide this kind of info Smile but it's interesting to hear what words people really don't know how to say.

It's mostly Aussies that I hear pronounce it with the accent on the second syllable.

One I thought I knew precisely how to pronounce, but now have heard well-educated people pronounce in another way, is:

segue

Which is it? SEG-way? or SEG-you? I know what I think, but when enough people say it another way I start to doubt myself...

Segue is one which I heard and understood but then saw and did not recognize. I say it seg-way, like the scooter vehicle that flopped. That's a weird word.

And nerokerr's comment helps, because I definitely heard some Aussies saying it that way.

Harassment

I've a friend who changed his pronunciation form ha-rass-ment to hair-ess-ment. Since he's an academic, I'm not sure if this is just some posh thing, or if I've just got it horribly wrong.

In my experience, the former is a more American pronunciation and the latter is a more English pronunciation.
