I need to no exactly how safe this actually is... I am coming from the US, probably around August some time in Johsburg/Gautang/Kreugersdorp... My children range in age from 2-7.. I am meeting a friend at the airport, and will spend two weeks with he and his son...

My ex- is not happy about my choice to visit... says it is too dangerous a place. All the things I read in IOL, and local newspapers are somewhat frightening, but I don't want to miss this "once in a lifetime" ... I need lots of GOOD--no GREAT info so that I can put my children's father's mind at ease a little... PLEASE HELP ME!!!

It all depends where you are going in South Africa ! I spent a month and a half there and absolutely loved it!!! I felt completely safe in the majority of the places I went ! The only place that I will say that I didnt feel safe in was Johannesburg (sorry I know that this isnt what you want to hear , but I have to be honest)! I would advise you not to go to go to Johannesburg, especially with children! However, there are some amasing places (including the other two places you've mentioned) in South Africa, that are completely safe!

No problem! If you go to the right places in South Africa you will have a great time and you will feel completely safe, I would recommend going there to everyone, it is an amasing country! I dont know how feasable it will be in your plans , but there are some other places in South Africa that I would recommend going to if you could get there! I loved Cape Town , Durban, anywhere along the Garden Route, Tsitsikamma National Park (great for seeing dolphins and just great scenary)and Krugar!
