Hello All!

Janelle here, I'm a 19 year old college student, who will be in South Africa in about a month! I CAN'T WAIT! I will be around CPT on a volunteer placement for 9 weeks, and then I will be traveling around for about 3 weeks. I'll be there from May 2nd-July 29th, so if anyone wants to meet up at any time, I'd love that! Anyways, on to my questions...

1.) Under the table work, I've heard backpackers are the best bet, any one have WOOFing experience, or anything a bit more "exciting" than backpackers?

2.) I want to try and get to Lesotho and Namibia which seem pretty do-able. Any advice on Swaziland or Mozambique?

3.)I heard of some tree house accomodation place somwhere in SA (pretty vague) any one hear of this?

Any other tips, strange/random/essential experiences I must have while in SOuth Africa would be much appreciated!! Feel free to mention anything hear resteraunts, festivals etc. Again, I will be in SA May 2nd-July 29th. Thanks everyone for reading through my longwinded ramblings!!

-Janelle

Hi there, great news about you coming to SA... you have picked a great time of the year!!

Where are you planning on travelling to in your 3 weeks? if you come to Durban let me know! Smile

To answer your questions:
1. i'm not sure about under the table work... but try backpackers and maybe small cafes and restuarants
2. all those countries are pretty easy to get to Baz Bus would probably be your best bet... check out their website
3. there are a few tree house places around SA... the one i know of is a backpackers on the South coast of KZN, called Mantis & Moon. i've never been, but i've heard great things about it and am really keen to go myself!

If you have anymore questions please don't hesitate to ask! Smile

Hey dopeyzn!

thanks so much for your reply and helpful advice! After being in Cape Town, I'm going to try and travel up the garden route in those three weeks, and I definintly want to make it up to Durban if I can, so I will let you know! Also want to get to some of the game parks in the KZN (Umfolozi, dont think I spelled that right Smile but I know that is closer to Durban. Would also like to try and see Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia, but this might be a little ambitious!! If I have any other questions, I will ask you because I've read through tons of posts on the South Africa board and you are so informed and really helpful! Thanks again, see you soon maybe!!

A few years ago we drove from Capetown to Oudtshoorn and it was the best. We went to Kango Caves and had a guided 2-3 km (YES 3 kilometers)cave tour that ended up in a crystal cavern that was sooooo amazing. The whole area was beautiful. Ostrich farms are everywhere and the landscape is eye candy. It sits on the edge of the Little Karoo (Desert?)where the vegetation is unique and worth the trip. A drive through an area called Seven Weeks Basin or Seweweekspoort is a beautiful spot to picnic. We always rent a car. Check and see if the Proteas are blooming and take some day drives to Paarl wine country
I am not sure about Lesotho and Swaziland...Its been 10 years since we were there. We stayed in LadyBrand and took day trips to see Ancient Rock Art and Dinosaur footprints on the roof of a cave. There is great beauty everywhere and Bird Migrations can be abundant in May..Use caution as you would in any big city. The rural areas are very welcoming. Have Fun
