So Im booking flights back home from Vic Falls and its looking like I might have an 8 hour layover in Johannesburg. Im on a tight budget and it will save me a little over a hundred bucks. Is it safe to leave the airport for a couple hours. Maybe just to eat or something? From what Ive been reading Im thinking it might not be worth it.

Not worth it. Anything worth seeing is quite a way off and the hundred bucks you save could be gone on getting there and back.

I agree with you both. The city's quite far from the airport - about 45 min away - and expensive to reach, because your only options are metered taxi or shuttle. Jo'burg airport, meanwhile, has about 8 hours' worth of diversions in it - if your read the newspapers slowly! Here's SA Blog's info guide on the airport: Johannesburg International Airport.

I have a layover at JNB from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Any idea if there are cheap hotels you can go to during the day to catch a nap and pass the time? Or is it not worth it to leave the secure area and have to go back through security?

Also, the link to the airport on the SA Logue is pointing me to another entry - do you know if it's still up somewhere?

Thanks!

Hi CMB, thanks for pointing that out, I have found the post and am relisting it. I will post a link later.

Kind regards
