Hello fellow travelers. My wife and I are planning a trip to Africa from Aug. 1st to Nov. 1st. We are hoping to buy a used car in South Africa, drive it around SA, into Mozambique and Zimbabwe, then back to SA. Then we will sell it and head home.

So I'm starting by putting the word out. I've come across a variety of people with similar plans at different times, so maybe if someone plans to show up late Oct we could help each other out and we could sell them our car. Likewise, if someone has a car they plan to sell late July/early Aug then maybe we could buy it from them.

Ideally we would like to find a 4 wheel drive, especially something we could camp/sleep in. I realize that selection may be limited but that's what we're shooting for.

SAB, Thanks for the links. We found (and bought) a good vehicle on the Auto Trader site. Now the challenge is getting insurance for our 3-month stay. The woman from whom we bought the car has been looking into it but says insurance companies have been reluctant or unwilling to do a policy for that period of time because of high risk. We were thinking maybe we could try buying a regular policy and claiming that we are moving so SA. Then we would cancel the policy after 3 months.

Do you have any ideas or experience on this front?

Fraid i don't but we can do some calling around when you get here. as I said in the other post, in SA the car will have 3rd party with the disk, and you would likely have to get extra insurance for mozambique/zimbabwe anyways.
