I was reading an article in the paper this morning about the 2010 soccer world cup and what benefits it's going to have for this country... it's actually very exciting!

From the article "There was already a "very strong" foundation for the event and even before the start of this year's World Cup, "commercially, 2010 was already more successful than 2006, which is an indication of the work going on in the background"."

They predict billions of Rands will be investmented and 10s of thousands of jobs will be created... awesome!

To give you an inside look into what's going on in Durban in preparation for this world event, a new airport is just about to break ground and they have just flatten the old soccer stadium and constracation has started for the all new 70 000-seater King Senzangakhona Stadium!

So come one down... it's gonna be one huge party!

2010?? Well if I pretend this is my freshman year then 2010 will be my graduating year. Are you going to pick me up at the airport?

That should give me time to study up on what "football" is really all about. I had hoped to get more into it this year as "they" said the USA had a good team. We all know how taht turned out. Frown

Start by calling it soccer... you might get it confused with NFL! Wink

I am very interested in going to the world cup in 2010, any suggestions as which stadium or city to focus on? I would love to follow the American team for a world cup, but i am nervous about safety in Jo' Burg really...

India, UAE, Africa next, follow me! I'm 24, why isn't 100 countries and 7 continents realistic in a lifetime...33 and 4 down...39 or 40 and 5 by end of year

Dopeyzn,

I highly doubt that "commercially, 2010 was already more successful than 2006".

The event is still 3.5 year away - how could it be more commerically successful at this point? I hope it is once it comes...that's for sure. Smile

Not sure if y'all know, but 5 of us from BnA were at the World Cup this past summer and produced this site:

http://www.worldcupblog.org

We plan on being there in 2010 as well and Philip of South Africa Logue I'm sure is quite excited as well.

I was just quoting a news paper article... but i can see where they are coming from as this will be the first African nation to host the event and that has resulted in large amounts of interest from all over the world!

I hope to see the BnA folk here... it's gonna be an event to remember! Smile

He might also get looks from down the nose from some lookers too Dopey - we call it soccer here too, but the purists do like to refer to it as football and I'll give it to them that they are closest to pushing a ball around with a foot, not having the multi faceted foot/hand skills of
Aussie Rules (footy) Rugby, League, Grid Iron or Gaelic.
That's right, they can bang the ball with their scone too - called a Falcon in League.

Those Afrikaaners are super progressive Sean, especially when it comes to banking the loot in advance but for Dopey's sake I will not go into past World Cup on field achievments!!! - nearly looks like three stumps!

Have to agree with Gonorth, It is definitely Football and only soccer when trying not to confuse it with Gridiron.

2010 is going to biggest blast for South Africa, since ever!, and there is already a buzz about it as the preparations are under way. Please don't worry yourself about the crime situation, it is vastly overblown in the media concerning tourists. Sure there is crime, but very little in the kinds of areas you will be frequenting.

Come on down it's gonna be a biiiiig party!

too funny. i was just in cape town last week and saw the site where they are going to build the 2010 stadium, its currently a golf course! but they still need the equivalent of some $20mil (US) or 150,000,000 rand to begin the project and the municipality is saying its not kicking in any more $$. sounds familiar heh?

As I plan to start my extended RTW in late 2008 or early 2009, I do believe that I'll make sure that I am in SA for the World Cup and as I plan on spending six months in Zambia that shouldn't be a problem. See you all there.

Lets hope South Africa can get their finger out as FIFA are already looking at the prospect of the venues not being ready for the world cup, so it might have to be held last minute in England or Germany
