It’s hard not to get spoiled by the climate and setting of Mossel Bay. Bordered on three sides by water, the town is set against the backdrop of the Outeniqua Mountains, and in whale season (which is nearly half of the year), whales can be spotted from beaches, roadsides, or hotel and restaurant verandas. And there are restaurants, hotels, and guesthouses, for every budget, making it and excellent base from which to explore the surrounding region. In just under two weeks, you can see some of South Africa’s most stunning scenery, most exclusive resorts and restaurants, or most endangered animals... it’s your call.

Here’s What to Do in Mossel Bay:
1. Have Lunch at the Point: A favorite for locals and tourists alike, The Point is also one of South Africa’s hottest surfing spots. Check with the Surf shop on Marsh St. for board rentals. For a drier alternative, grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants, and walk along the water, into town, passing charming pastel houses and the occasional fisherman along the way.
2. Visit the Diaz Museum Complex & Tourist Info Center: Where you can see the tree used by early European explorers as a “post office”, a replica of the Diaz ship, native marine life, a shell exhibit, and more. Have lunch next door at The Gannet. Their “Line Fish” or catch-of-the-day, is always fresh and tasty, and their ostrich skewers are nothing short of “lekker”.
3. Cage Dive with Sharks: The Catamaran takes you out to Seal Island, where sharks spend the day hunting for their main food source... you guessed it - seals!
4. Hike the St. Blaize Trail (4 hours one way): This trail, which starts at the Khoi Cave at The Point, offers stunning views of the area, including impressive cliffs, endless ocean, waterfalls, and the native flora and fauna.
Day Trips
5. Spend the Day in Oudtshoorn: And sample some of their world-famous ostrich for lunch, visiting the incredible Cango Caves, Cango Wildlife Ranch, or Wilgewandel Holiday Farm in the afternoon.
6. Drive to George (take the scenic route!): Where you can have lunch at the world-famous Fancourt Resort, and return to Mossel Bay via the National Highway, N2
7. Head to Knysna for Oysters: Have lunch at the Waterfront, then drive out to the Knysna Heads for a view that will last a lifetime.
8. Go Bungee-Jumping over the Goritz: Or just watch the adrenaline junkies while appreciating the drop-dead scenery.
9. Take the Swartberg Pass up to Prince Albert: Stop in the town Museum for a bit of Karoo History, then have some authentic Karoo Lamb at Onse Rus (reservations recommended).
10. Sign up for the “Meet the People” Tour: Where you’ll have coffee in a Township, an Oyster Tasting in “Klein Braak”, a cup of Tea at an herbal garden, etc!
11. Do a Game Drive: at Botlierskop Private Game Reserve. You’ll likely spot elephant, Springbok, Impala, Bontebok, Giraffe, Rhinos, Water Buffalo, and Lions!
12. Sign up for an Elephant- or Horseback Safari at Botlierskop Private Game Reserve. If you’re longing for something different, give this a try. You’re not likely to see any game on the elephant-back safari, but it’s not uncommon to see wildlife on horseback.
