Hello there

Later this year we are leaving London ( Yeah ) to get married at Cape of Good Hope and Honeymoon around Sth Africa for approx 2-4 months.

Im British/Aust, my fiance is originally from Durban.

We will mostly be Camping, though some B&B, Hostel (double rooms etc.)will be thrown in along the way when we feel the need.

We will have our own van to travel with, and our interests and type of travel are to cruise along stopping when we want to and observe and indulge in the local cuisine, wildlife and culture.

Extreme activity's is not our thing ( In awe and Arghh!! to people who do though )

Has anyone travelled for this long before? and think this is a ok time limit to see most/alot of S.A ?

We are thinking of arriving in Joh, stay there and Pretoria to do business things and family for about 2 bit weeks, travel on train to Capetown ( marriage , wedding night (Ooh!) and looking around CT and surrounding area's )for roughly 10 days.

Fly back to Joh and pretoria to start travelling with van through Kruger, go north & westwards, down inwards to CT, then up (inland and coast) to Durban and beyond.

When I do mention the timeframe to my fiance, he say's Yeh, no problem, but he does subconciously talk African time ( Its a nightmare in London, believe me )

Also, I was thinking of roughly USD$80.- $90. perday for us as a couple. Realistic ?

Anyone here to help me ? It would get me on the right track, so I can plan and budget now.

Any output and thoughts on any of the questions would be greatly appreciated.

Argghh !! I feel like Ive talked on behalf of the whole human race... Sorry

Many Thanks

Im so jealous! I love South Africa, I wish I was back there! I would love to be able to spend 2-4 months there! I think that would be a perfect amount of time there! I spent about a month and a half over there and I saw huge amounts, but I wasn't ready to come home, so I would say that 3 maybe 4 months would be just right! I would recommend going up the garden route for some great scenary! Also a stop off in the Tsistsikamma National Park would be nice! Durban is awesome as is Cape Town! Have a great time and congratulations on the Wedding!

I was in SA last April. It's 7 Rand to a dollar, so $90/day should be more than enough.

South Africa is a VERY big country. See it all in 2 months? Could do. We went for 11 days and stayed in Cape Town and the surrounds the whole time. It was not enough time and filled every second of every day.

I would say you need at least two weeks in and around Cape Town, then a week or more to do the Garden Route, plus a couple weeks at the various National Parks and several weeks split between Durban, Jo'Burg and the like. Also, may want to think about trying to get to Victoria Falls while down there.

Several African airlines fly around the area. Just a thought.

Have fun. I'm jealous! It's a wonderful place!

I travelled around South Africa for one month in December/January and was able to spend a little less than $1200 USD during that month (not inclusing the cost of a plane ticket). We rented a car and mostly stayed in hostels but I also have a lot of family over there that we were able to stay with for free. Depending on what type of places you stay and what type of transport you use, I think $80-90 USD per day is more than enough!
