I have a nine-hour layover at JNB and was thinking of checking something out in Pretoria during that time. From what I've heard, it's about a 30 minute cab ride. How much would a cab ride like that usually cost? Are there any other options to get to Pretoria on public transporation?

Any advice would be great!

private taxi around 250 rand (~35 US) each way, or you can take minibus taxi to Kempton park, then private to pretoria, for maybe 100 rand or less total. private taxi will take more like 45 min to get to pretoria city center, if there's no traffic. if there's a wreck or something, it can be brutally slow. and of course minibus will be slower.

i don't know what you want to do in pretoria, but there's not a ton of touristy type stuff. the zoo, in the north of the city, is really great. on sundays there's a really nice market in hatfield. mamelodi in the east is an interesting township, if you just want to see a more normal township without the memorials, mandela house, etc... it doesn't have developed areas like soweto. i don't know if they even do tours there, though.

my point is, i've been living in pretoria two months, and i love it... but... how can i put this... it's the kind of city you want to get to know at first, you know, and not rush things... not the kind of city you take home the first night and never call again.

hey,

Thanks for the heads up. There was a site I wanted to visit in Pretoria that I'm planning to write about, so I figured if it was doable I might try to do it during my layover. Sounds like it's kind of a pain, though.

What's the general advice on getting cabs at the airport? Is there an official line and are there any non-cab drivers that attempt to pick up rides who I should watch out for?

I'm told there is an official line. Out of curiosity, what is the site you are going to see?
