I'll be arriving in Capetown around October 1st, and seeeing as how my bank account is looking a little thin, I may decide to hang out there for a while and work. Anyone know how easy it is to find temporary work there? Any ideas, tips, etc, are appreciated.

Unemployment in SA is very high so finding a job could be very tricky! Do you have a visa to work in SA or are you looking to do it 'under the table' and what kind of work would you be looking for?

I'm not exactly sure, just wondering what might be available. I know very little about Capetown at this point. I'll be doing an overland from Nairobi to Capetown in about two months, and will arrive in Capetown around October 1st. My orignal plan was to then head up to Europe, but the bank account is looking a little thin so I thought I might want to hang out in Capetown a while and try and save up some money.
I'm not looking to get rich, just wanting to extend the trip a little longer. I imagine that working under the table would be better. I'm a computer programmer by trade, but also have restaraunt/bar experience, retail experience, construction experience, blah, blah, blah. Basically a jack of all trades, master of none. -------------------- tmags "There are many ways to lose your life besides dying." - Unknown "To fall into habit is to cease to be." - Miguel de Unamuno Travel Blog: So There I was... |

First question... why do you want to stick to Cape Town for 2 months, there is so much to see in South Africa and it's def not all in CT?
Well work wise, as i said jobs are hard to come by but your best chance of getting work would be in the resturant/bar industry! ________________________________________________________________ "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans" John Lennon |

dopeyzn,
I think you misunderstood. I'm going to be traveling in Africa for 2+ months, overland from Nairobi to Capetown, and finishing my trip in Capetown. After being on the road for those two months, I thought I might want to stay in Capetown a while before continuing my trip. Thanks for the suggestions. Your best bet is to get a job in a backpackers. October starts to get busy so they will be looking.

Check out Cape Town Backpack in Tamberskloof (sp?). I just stayed there for a few days, and they are looking for people. You can either work for a free bed, or for cash. The pay's not great, but it helps!
