Has anyone done the Otter Trail in Tsitsikamma National Park? I am also looking for advice on bookings and finding a group to possibly hike the trail with in late April/early May. Are there any hostels in the region that organize treks?

Thanks!

Hi there... the trail is extremely popular and there is a 2 year waiting list for bookings! I have a friend who has made a block booking (12 people) for late May and are unable to use it, if you are interested please PM me! Smile

Two year waiting list! That bums me out! Frown Especially since late May is too late for me - I will be in SA only from April 10-May 12. During that month, my schedule is flexible, but then I've booked an overland trip heading through a few other countries in the region. The Otter Trail looks incredible, though, and I love hiking. Maybe I'll get lucky and meet some people along the way who have an extra spot...

Well, I've been slowly working on figuring that out! thus far, I am interested in seeing Johannesburg, Kruger, hiking in Drakensburg, something in Tsitsikamma probably - even if not the Otter Trail, some wine tasting along the Garden Route, and Cape Town. Also would like to get to Swaziland and Lesotho. And I'm sure there are other various stops in between all those places that I will be reading about as I continue planning and want to try to squeeze in. Smile

I see you are from Durban? What are the must-sees there?

Durban is a very chilled, laid back city... it's the surrounding areas that have stuff to do... there is the Drakensburg, the Midlands, Zululand and the Wild coast. Check out KZN Tourism for details

How are you planning on getting around?

You could check out the battle fields. I have visited these, and found them very interesting, but I am a bloke. Smile

If you have seen the film Zulu Dawn, with Michael Caine, then you can visit the location of the actual battle, at Rourkes Drift. It's a little bit further North from Drakensburg. I stayed in a nice resort in Drakensburg set in a valley - watch out for the Baboons, and don't whatever you do, feed em.

Good idea, if you are looking into going to the Drakensberg then you should def look into the Battlefields... check out this site for more details. Also if you are interested in Zulu culture and history, look into Giant's Castle, where you can do guided hikes and tours to view San rock paintings.

Thanks for all the ideas and the links! I am thinking of traveling around by Baz Bus - which I have seen mentioned a lot on these boards.
