I'm heading to South Africa for 7 weeks, from July to late August and I'm wondering what professional sports will be in season around that time.

I would really like to catch a game of rugby, cricket, or football as I've never been to a live match before. Can anyone offer their opinion of which city would be best to catch a game in, as far as atmosphere, team quality, etc, go?

Hey there... i've been sitting here racking my brain but can't come up with an answer! As far as i know July and August are pretty quiet months in professional sport here in SA... rugby and cricket are played in summer, i'm not 100% sure about soccer! I'll have a look into it and get back to you... but it's awesome that you are interested in watching some SA sport.

Pity you are here now... the rugby and cricket seasons are in full swing and it's very exciting stuff! Smile

Hey Dopeyzn, I've just been doing a bit of research and it appears the Tri-Nations cup is during the period of July-August. Does this tourney happen every year, or is it every couple of years like World Cup?

Are tickets expensive? Hard to come by?

My bad... i forgot about the Tri-Nations! It's a annual competition between SA, Australia and New Zealand... it's very exciting rugby!

Fixtures:
16/08 SA vs NZ in Cape Town
23/08 SA vs Aus in Durban
30/08 Sa vs Aus in Johannesburg

Because they are international games the tickets are normally a little pricey... they won't release prices until closer to the time and they do tend to sell quiet quickly! Maybe keep an eye on Computicket, they will be the ticket agents!

Smile

Oh boy, I checked out the tickets, they want over E200!

I think I'll have to settle for some minor league stuff.

I have an answer for you... SA's domestic premier rugby competition, the Currie Cup starts in June and carries on until October, so you should defiantely be able to catch a game or two. I orginally thought it was played earlier cos they keep changing the names of these competitions (i thought they'd changed the name to the Vodacom Cup) but the Currie Cup is the competition the watch!

Check out this site for fixtures... they haven't been finalised yet cos it's far in advance but there will be tickets available to all games and they are very reasonably priced!

Smile

Right on, thanks so much. I'm definitely looking forward to catching a game or two, either in Durban or Cape Town.

I'll be the newest Sharks fan Trinque
