I have two huge recomendations! 1) If you are traveling from Cairo, fly there! It is cheaper than taking the overnight train, and much more comfortable than a bus. We went directly to an EgyptAir office in Cairo (make sure you are not going to a travel agent selling EgyptAir flights, they make a commission off of these) and booked for the next day. 2) If you need a place to stay in Luxor, look into the Happyland Hotel (written up in LonelyPlanet)! It was clean, the staff was friendly and informative. They don't push their tours on you, but they can get you everything cheaper than anyone else and cheaper than going direct. It really made our trip, especially after a bad experience with a hostel in Cairo (Lialy).... we moved from there to Dahab - another recomendation if you are looking to chill out somewhere for a few days.
