How much do people tend to tip their guides and cooks? I would especially like to hear from people who did budget tours. For a group of 4 on a 5 day trip ($750 per person), would $200 from all of us be excessive, stingy, or appropriate? Thanks in advance!

It depends upon which country. South Africa is probably much different on tips then Kenya. I think $150 total would be good - and then each person contributes their portion of that $150.

We will be in Tanzania if that makes a difference. I don't want to overdo it on our tight budget but I really don't want to under do it either.

That is too much. $150 is perfect. That's how much a typical Tanzanian makes in 4 months.

I have strong opinions about this so I'll tone it down.

I believe that the tip should be based on what you believe the level of service was to you and not based on what a guide is expecting (i.e. based on some idea of what their standard of living is and what is right for their income level), or some arbitrary percent of what you paid for the trip.

What is their service worth to you? Pay more if you like it, pay less if you don't.

Hi there,

I agree with Slip. I work as a tour leader in another part of the world and tipping is very much appreciated but not necessarily expected and I think it should be based on the level of service given.

The thing is also too, if you're going to be in a camp for that time or if you're moving around. You will most likely have the guide and driver to consider in that case and in the camp the staff.

It's a bit of a hard call, but I also agree with Slip. How much did you like it and what can you all give. In general these guys don't make a lot of money, so every bit helps them and is apreciated.
