Hey everybody, just came back a few months ago from Tanzania and fell in cliched love with the country. Well, I'm planning on doing a 6-8 month volunteer tour in 2011.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a legitimate and moderately inexpensive company they would recommend to help organize a volunteer vacation that covers many countries for a single female traveller? I am hoping to visit at least 5 while I'm there at monthly increments, finishing in Jambiani for 2 months at the end. Any advice would be appreciated, and thanks! |

Hey where abouts were you in Tanzania? I spent the year there last year in Iringa, Njombe and a little village called Lugarawa all in the Southern Highlands.
I too fell crazily in love with the country and am going back in August because I can't stay away from it any longer! Sorry i dont actually have any advice about volunteer companies that do volunteer holidays but I always get excited when I hear from someone who spent time in Tanzania. |

I spent one month in Jambiani, Zanzibar volunteering. It's a very small village away from the standard zanzibary tourist circuit on the south-east coast. The second month I spent in Arusha, camping on the north rim of the Ngorogoro Crater for 2 weeks and did the standard safari bit in Ndutu.
The sheer beauty of this country brought me to tears on many occasion. No I was not off my meds, but I haven't seen anything that ever came close. I have a few years to save up, but need to go back. This isn't just an ID thing. I found my heart there. So, I would like to end off in the East coast. Taking Swahili lessons now so that my language skills are flawless once I go back. Would love to stay for a year though! We're you with a NGO? |

Yeah I was with an NGO called Student Partnership Worldwide - I did an 8 month program teaching Sexual and reproductive health education.
I know what you know mean about finding your heart there. I feel the same. I hope you get to go back soon. Goodluck with everything! |

I'm headed to Africa in September and hope to do a few weeks of volunteerism through some churches in an effort to help and serve some local communities.
Am I wrong in assuming that churches (Christian or otherwise) would be good volunteerism host entities? or is serving through a church participating in too much of a biased/agenda-ized experience? Your thoughts. I'm not too keen on paying to volunteer...I can handle paying to stay somewhere to work...but paying for the right to volunteer doesn't jive well with me. I hope to hear more on your question as I'm hoping to give back while I'm there as well. I'm happy for you that you've found a place and a people to love and serve--that's terrific.--eddie |
