Greetings, Everyone!

I've really enjoyed reading these boards. You have all been fascinating to "listen" in on and have helped me plan parts of my yearlong round the world trip already!

I just have a question: my husband and I will be in Egypt in September this year, which is the holy month of Ramadan. Do any of you know how/if this will affect our trip? We might not really be able to change the date, but still, would like to know what to look out for. Should our meal schedule mirror theirs? Will this make it more difficult to move around via bus or taxi?

Also, after Egypt we plan on going overland to Turkey, across the Red Sea, up Jordan, and through Syria. Anyone else do this trip? We're both looking forward to this trip!

Ramadan should not affect your time in Egypt greatly.

People still run their business and still understand that tourism is a major part of their economy.

That stated you may find some extra security and more crowds at the mosques. It will also be more difficult to get services in the evenings.

You'll be fine. Look at it as an opportunity to observe how Ramadan is celebrated. Go outside in the evenings and watch the people as they make up for a day without eating and drinking.

The only way you may be affected is if you want to move around in Egypt. It may be more difficult than usual to get tickets on the buses you want. Also, if you plan on hiring a car with a driver, remember that the driver will not eat or drink during the day. On a hot day, this WILL affect his ability to drive the car. So to the extent that you will be using a car with a Muslim driver, try to get the driving done with before noon, in the morning, when the man isn't dehydrated yet.

Otherwise, eat and drink as you please. The Egyptians accept that infidels aren't bound by the rules of the Ramadan.

Happy trails!

Hello Janola,
I Was in Egypt last year during Ramadan and it was fine. The first two posters are right on. I remember being concerned before I went as well. If anything, it was very interesting to be able to experience it. It's neat to see everyone getting ready to feast when the sun goes down, and also to see the festivals/parades especially at the end.

It may have actually been a benefit in that most people refrained from smoking during the day as well. Smile

Thanks so much for the info.

I didn't think our trip would be negatively affected, but it's nice to be reassured.
