Hey, I was there for 10 days and I really recommend that you hire a guide and do a trip to high Atlas, it was amazing and probably one of the best things I have ever done.

Still looking for Carmen Sandiego |
Get yourself out to the desert for a few nights. Don't organize with a tour group (I did this and it was too quick) Get yourself out to Rissani or Erfoud (towns near the edge of the Sahara)
Organize a camel trek and a couple of nights in the desert from here rather than in Marrakesh. ________________________________ When the son of the diposed King of Nigeria emails you DIRECTLY asking for help, you help. The Misadventures of Joey | My FLICKR pics |

Where's my Cabana boy? |
If you're in Marrakech there are a hundred little trips you can take out of town for the day...or for a few days that are totally worth your while:
1. Essouaria is an awesome little beach town. Very groovy and relaxed. Great fish stalls. One of my favorite things to do there was go down to the warf, haggle over fish, take it to the stalls and have the people fry it (for 1/2 the price of the tourist stalls...while doubly as fresh). 2. Ourika Valley. It's a great place to go and do some hiking. The views are amazing. The first time I went through the Atlas Mountains I thought it was one of the most beautiful places I'd ever seen. Apparently when the Greeks went through they thought it was the end of the world. Anyway- I'd highly reccomend staying there and hiking around. 3. Hike around Azilal as well. Great places you can stop in along the way and sleep at. They arn't gorgous hotels but they are kept up well and the people who run the guesthouses (your guide will know which ones to take you to--and yes, get a guide in Azilal) are very hospitable. 4. Cascades de Ozoud: Great place to picnic for hte day. Or spend a night there. They are near Azilal so you could actually go to the Cascades, and then go on a trek afterwards. Refreshing place with great tajine. Places in Marrakech I'd reccomend: *Bahija Palace: Awesome if you love Islamic architecture *Agudel Gardens: Similar to the Menara gardens but with 1/10th the amount of tourists. Just as beautiful and tucked away in one of the older neighborhoods (my old neighborhood to be exact!) Near the gardens are basketball courts, walkways lined with orange blossoms and jasmine and some great resturants. I used to walk there when the sun was setting and it was gorgeous. *Souqs. Get a guide or just wander in. Go browsing and buy things. Haggle always. Never is there a time not to haggle. Even if they tell you there is a set price, they are lying. And whatever they say try to get it to 1/2 or 1/3 of the price. That's about how much it's worth. *Djem El Fna: Try the barboush (that's N. African snail soup) and Khotenjel (spicy tea) and listen to the music and storytelling at night. Also the orange juice is to die for. Erm...and wander. It's a lovely place. And let me know if you'd like any more info. ___________________________ 'The time has come,' the Walrus said, 'To talk of many things: Of shoes -- and ships -- and sealing wax -- Of cabbages -- and kings -- And why the sea is boiling hot -- And whether pigs have wings |
