I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on buying a 4x4 in tanzania (plus how much it would cost approx) and driving down from dar to sa....border crossing issues, great places to stay/camp etc etc. anyway info would be hugely appreciated!

This is a tricky proposition although not impossible. I'm wondering however why you would go to the hassle of buying a vehicle when the train and bus routes are so accessible and cheap? If you would like info on that those options e-mail me directly and I'll give you a quick overview on how I did it to point you in the right direction for your own further research.

I have done a similar trip, but we drove from SA up to Northern Kenya and back down to SA. I wouldn't recommend buying a vehicle in Tanzania tho... it would be extremely expensive esp when as it would be considered as importing a vehicle when crossing borders and there would be taxes and duties imposed on you. A better idea would be to buy a vehicle in SA and drive to Dar and back or to join a overland tour!
There are many highlights not to be missed on the way, like a trip to Zanzibar and the Serengeti, i would definately suggest making a trip thru malawi as well... the locals are extremely friendly and the lake is amazing! ________________________________________________________________ "When making your choice in life, do not neglect to live." -- Dr Samuel Johnson |

Just another thought regarding the purchase of a vehicle in tanzania (if you're really bent on that) why don't you contact Boot's n All's Kilimanjaro booking agent Donovan. He lived there for several years and should knowe the in's and outs of your question.

It may be easier to go from Cape town to DAR.
More options for buying cars/land rovers and you probably get a better advantage for selling the vechicle in TZ. THings can be tricky in TZ and the further south you go, the easier things become, more hints of westerination you'll get. good luck in your travels, Lauren roaming in africa now |
