So, are you going to walk, drive your own incredibly sturdy car, go on an organized overland tour or will you travel by public transportation? Do you mind less than perfectly clean hotel rooms? How much time are you willing to spend out-waiting police and soldiers looking for bribes? What route will you follow? Do you actually know that the distance we're talking about is at least 12250 kilometres of generally rough roads?

I think you need to supply some more details before anyone can give you a useful answer. #8D) And it certainly sounds like you're going to be needing something like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Africa-Overland-Bradt-Travel-Guide/dp/1841621358 .

Good luck anyway!

Have you read Dark Star Safari?

In all seriousness, maybe see if Paul Theroux (sp?) has any information on what it costs. He did exactly the same thing.

While it is a good idea to read this book, it has little information on cost. It is also is not a good reflection of what to expect as Paul's experiences and reflections are quite unique and situational (i.e., very few people travel like he does or have his contacts).

Oh, I agree. Sorry, I didn't meant to imply he was writing about what it cost him. I kind of got the impression that money really wasn't an issue for him. He seemed to have what he needed, and that was that. Plus with all the people he knew he was 'couch-surfing' for a while, he'd be able to do it cheaper.

I just meant that it could be that somewhere on the internet there's been a discussion about what it could have cost him. Like if Theroux has a website or something it might be on that. That's probably the place I'd start looking for budget info.

Tell me how you expect to be traveling---plane, rail, minibus, etc. and how quickly you expect to do it....also level of accommodation and I'll work you up an estimate based on the numbers I've gotten from travel books and the numbers I'm using to budget my trip. (I'm leaving in Sept. for Cape Town!)--Eddie

I can only offer you a little bit of information on the leg of the trip that I've actually experienced.

I've been to Ethiopia and travel from city to city is really cheap. I'm going to assume that since you are adventurous enough to traverse the continent from top to bottom that you probably will also be on a budget and won't have any problem sleeping in less than desirable accommodation occasionally. Hotels in Ethiopia for the backpacking type tend to cost anywhere from $10-$25. A 2 day bus ride from the north to Addis in the center won't cost you more than $1-2. Food is usually $2-5 depending on what you eat. Beer is no more than $1.

Aside from Djibouti it might be a safe assumption that the rest of the horn of Africa is generally the same.

As for the rest of your trip, I can't really comment on Southern Africa.
