Hello there
I am planning a trip to the northern parts of Mozambique (Vilanculos to Pemba), into Malawi, Zambia (South Luangwa Park and Victoria Falls) and then back down to Cape Town. I am planning to drive from Cape Town through Kruger Park into Mozambique.

I have plenty of experience travelling through Africa. Travelled with 3 friends from London to Cape Town and a few times by bike from Johannesburg to Zanzibar.

What I bring:
1) a fully kitted Toyota 4x4
2) all camping equipment (except your tent)
3) Africa knowledge

What you need to bring
1) an adventurous mind
2) tent
3) be flexible so that if we like a certain place to be able to stay a day or 2 longer.
4) Common sense

Duration
From the start in Cape Town back to Cape Town between 30 and 35 days.

To echo dopeyzn, It does indeed sound awesome, when are you thinking of leaving and with how many people?

I am planning to leave in November 08. I was planning already February/March 08 but due to the heavy rain and floods, we will need to postpone. Furthermore, as November/December can get very hot in Zambia, I will turn the whole trip the other way round in order to do South Luangwa first. As we stay along the coast of Mozambique for the rest of the time, the heat is not that an issue.

The vehicle I have is a Toyota Hilux 4x4 and therefore 4 people will be the maximum. The only real cost saving on the trip for more people will be the fuel, so to me it is not important to have maximum capacity but the 'right' people on board.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and we can take it further.

i recently did a similar trip... from durban, up the coast of mozambigue to dar es salaam and then inland up to north kenya and then back to durban via tanzania, malawi, mozambique and zimbabwe. i'll def agree that the right mix of people is essential for the trip.

how long do you estimate the trip will take you?

Hello Dopeyzn

Nice trip you've done. Is it now possible to cross the Ruvoma River from Moz to Tanz with a car?

I do not wish to rush the tour as I would like to explore the countryside and coastal parts of Northern Moz as well as South Luangwa in more detail. Ex Cape Town back to Cape Town I am planning 30 - 35 days. No rush no stress and yes, the right people most definitely. No lipstick, high heels, hair dryer or 5 star travellers allowed Smile

yep... except you need to contact the ferry operator before hand to arrange a time to cross on his rickety ferry. it's an interesting and eye opening experience to say the least Wink

Reminds me of the Chris de Burgh song: Don't pay the Ferryman.

Yip, welcome to Africa.

Who knows, maybe I change the route slightly as I still would like to see Selous. They say it is spectacular. Only problem is then I have to get a Carnet du Passage which is rather expensive. In Southern Africa I won't need it but will for Tanzania. But at the end of the day, my main focus is Northern Mozambique. How did you find it? Very interested to see Ile de Mozambique and Pemba.

Northern Mozambique is very untouched, which is awesome and beautiful!
