I'm planning on going to Capetown and Namibia for about 4 weeks (spend the first week in Capetown and the rest of the time in Namibia) starting around X-mas. Has anyone traveled these areas around that time of year? I'm a little concerned from what I read on the LP site about when to go:

It's best to avoid Namib-Naukluft Park and Etosha National Park in the extreme heat (December to March), and Fish River Canyon is closed to the public between December and April. The northeastern rivers may flood during this time too, making some roads either impassable or hard to negotiate. Resort areas are busiest during both Namibian and South African school holidays - usually from mid-December to mid-January

hi, I just got back from a long trip to Africa...the last 4 weeks of which were in Namibia
I hired a bakkie (pick-up truck ) with roof tent and toured almost ALL of Namibia, I think (6000km in 3 weeks)
Etosha is NOT good during the wet season: the animals all disappear out of view of the normal roads - I only saw 2 lions together in 2 visits of 6 days in total - tho I did see LOTS of giraffe, springbok, wildebeeste etc.
Fish River canyon is open in that you can visit the TOP of the canyon but there are no day trips to the bottom (I think this is the case ALL year)
many of the roads (particularly in the North were underwater - I had to detour a few times (including a long detour around FR canyon due to a washed away road leading into Ai Aix(sp?)
BUT...I had the BEST time i nNamibia..I would recommend it to ANYONE on ANY budget!
enjoy

I can't really comment about Namibia... but can give you some advise about CT! The weather is great in CT in Dec/Jan, it's a great time of the year and you'll be able to take full advantage of all the attractions and sites. The only draw back is that it is school holidays and most people are on leave at this time. CT is a very popular destination for locals, so the city will be full of hussle and bussle and you'll get the chance to meet loads of locals! Smile
