I am a fairly experienced female backpacker and have travelled in various parts of Asia and Central America alone. I like gallivanting to less travelled areas. As North Africa is a different ball game , I need information, additionally I may be travelling alone for parts of the journey.

Has anybody travelled there alone or in small groups recently (male or female)?
I would appreciate any information on
1) daily costs for budget travellers
2) travel between cities/towns, the ruin sites. (By the way I cannot drive)
3) the local peoples' general attitude towards backpackers (male and female)
4) language!! Can I get around in English/Spanish/German? Or only Arab alone?
5) And any other information u can think of.

If all goes well I expect to travel between 20th December to early-mid January. I would also be interested to meet up/know any travellers who may be passing thru' that region around that time.

I have worked in Alger's a few times and can give some information from that only. The main languages are French and Arabic with english coming 3rd. The people are very friendly and many in Alger's speak some english. Security if very high and if you read the info from your consulate it will tell you do not go. My experience would be its not so bad if you are careful.Do not be alone if at all possible. Being female will subject you to discrimination but not like Saudi etc.
Incidents still occur quite frequently like random shootings on freeways etc. It is really up to luck. Alger's you will probabully find no tourists and it would suprise me if you can get a visa .
Most Europeans I meet going in and out ( 4 times ) were suprised I did not have armed escorts but I did not feel it required .

I am quite experience business traveller in all corners . The choice I would say is only yours.
