Has anyone take the ferry from Bariloche to Puerto Montt? I can only find one company that seems to go this route, and it´s a bit pricey. It looks beautiful...but is it worth it? Are there any other options from Bariloche. Thanks for any help.

It is one of the great boat-bus-boat-bus-boat trips of the world. To traverse the Andes via this method was one of my really memorable moments in South America. Screw the cost-do it! And ABSOLTUELY go two miles down the road from Puerto Montt to San Anjelmo-amazing fish stalls (try the curanto), crafts, boats coming and going.

it is pricey compared to taking the regular bus route. my wife and i just left that area and are on our way to salta. i have read that some people really enjoyed it and some thought it was not worth the money. we took the bus to puerto montt for about 15 dollars US. puerto montt is not that great of a city. the waterfront is fun for about a day or two, if you like seafood. take the ferry down to chaiten and do as much of the carreterra austral as possible. it is a lot more money to travel in chile right now. when you get to chaiten talk to nicolas. he is the local tour operator and knows a lot about the area and how to get around(he will probably find you at the ferry landing). he is really cool. highlights include pumalin national park, hot springs, whitewater rafting, alerce trees, mtn. biking, kayaking and a serious off the beaten trail atmosphere.
peace,
bryan

Thanks for the responses. Assuming there´s availability, I think I´m going to do it. It looks too good to miss...and I can get a (relatively) inexpensive flight back to BA from Puerto Montt, so it seems somewhat practical, anyway.
