i stayed at the hostel on santo domingo and loved it. i don't remember the rate but it wasn't too bad for a private room with bathroom.

their website is here: http://www.cartagenainfo.net/hotelsantodomingo/index.html

i don't think you need to pre-pay reservations. but i showed up at that hostel i stayed at.. it wasn't a big deal so i think you should be fine if you decide to show up or if you decide to lock in your dates.

Depends what your budget is for the hotel. Santa Clara hotel is probably the best in Cartegena.

September is a great time to visit Colombia - whether should be fine, and not too crowded.

I dunno what kind of fancy ass travelling you are doing if you are going to stay in the Santa Clara. That's big time baby....I used to teach english to the General Manager....

You don't need reservations, depending on what kind of hotel you are looking at. There are hundreds. Take a cab from the airport to Getsemani, if you are a budget person...to Boca Grande if you are a little more loose with your money....and Laguito if you want something close to the beach...Go to old town if you are really looking to shelll out.

Do not stay in Hotel Familiar in Getsemani. It's in the midst of all of the other cheap accommodations and were stealing money out of everybody's rooms. Police were involved and it was ridiculous.

Everywhere else in that surrounding area had good reviews from the other travelers. And you won't need a reservation unless you're dead set on staying in one of the Lonely Planet suggestions. They book up in the summer, but may be emptier in September.
