So, i took Dukoral before i left, and have been eating pretty much anywhere for the past 2.5 months in Peru, Chile, and Bolivia.

However, the time of reckoning has come, and ive had progressively worsening gastric pains, and diarhea since i left Oruro a week ago..

Immodium worked at 1st,

Now i wake up at 5am everyday and shit liquid, and am in general not feeling well.

Especially today, 6hour bus ride nearly killed me... the gastric bubbles painfully put pressure on my bladder.

What can i do? are there antibiotics available over the counter?

Foods to avoid?

Agree with above poster. You gad been doing fine for 2.5 months so your stomach should've been pretty much adopted to the local bacteria. But, as the case is now, a week of diarrhea, and no feeliing better, you'd better see a doctor. It can be salmonella that needs to be treated with antibiotics.

Alright, thanks guys.

Im going to give it a couple days, as im feeling better (albeit w/ liquid stools) Today.

The descent from Uyuni to Potosi has seemed to help, as did an awesome Diazapam sleep. I am focusing on diet and hydration, and luckily here in Uyuni there are restaurants which can cater to my needs.

Physically i feel better.. no immodium today, and i can at least go out without worrying + the gas has subsided.

Im hoping that the worst is over, and am thinking possibly that my relatively mild symptoms gained severity after eating a steak that was partially cooked (i didnt eat it, but it touched my mouth.)

Ill give it 2 days, and then heed your advice if necessary (as of now, i dont FEEL that im in danger.)

-- its a damn shame, im on a timeline to finish my bike trip and reach argentina, and this has totally stolen 5 days out of my last 5 weeks. --

I take it you didn't bring any Cipro with you? When my gf had ongoing problems during our travels, a one week course did wonders. Seems like if time's an issue it's better to go to the doctor now than wait another week and still be suffering.

Don't know anything about Bacticel, but the description on that link doesn't appear to have any antibiotic in it, which is likely what you really want to be taking if the runs aren't going away.

Oh, scrap that. Just wasn't an antibiotic I'd heard of. Yeah, what you're taking probably has a high chance of success then. But if you haven't had noticeable improvement in a couple of days, should probably still see a doctor.

Amazing, after only 2 doses and a meal i feel great again.

I will continue treatment until my supply runs out. I am much relieved - also glad to hear "Yeah, what you're taking probably has a high chance of success then."

Distrust of my travel clinic (over perscribing) led me to think an antibiotic was unnecessary - Next time i will have Cipro.

Thanks.

Being the GF in the aforementioned post, I concur. Never leave home without Cipro. I was affected with the Pharoah's Curse - I had totally forgotten that we even had the Cipro until another traveller offered me something similar. After a couple of days, I was feeling as good as new - but take the whole dose! even if you are feeling better after just a couple of days, it could always come back if not fully treated.

Glad to hear you were able to get a good remedy over the counter. That's not always an easy thing to do!
