MY WIFE AND I ARE PLANNING A VACATION TO BRASIL - FIRST TIME - AND PLAN TO SPEND 8 DAYS IN RIO. WE LOVE THE BEACH AND GOOD FOOD / CONSERVATIVE NIGHTLIFE. CAN YOU HELP WITH INFORMATION SUCH AS THE SAFETY OF THE CITY, GOING TO DINING AREAS OUTSIDE THE HOTELS AT NIGHT (SAFE?) AND ANY OTHER TIPS OR SUGGESTIONS YOU COULD PROVIDE.

THANK YOU!

I should suggest that if you are mostly looking for beaches, good food, nightlife, without the danger aspect (only in unlit areas as a rule), that you stay in Rio for 2 days. Do the tourist things, check out Christ the Redeemer statue, Maracaná stadium, Sugar Loaf(Pão de Azuçar), spend an afternoon at one of the outdoor cafés across from either of the beaches at Copacabana or Ipanema, check out the Carmen Miranda Museum, then get the hell out of town to Buziós. Cleaner all around, wonderful beaches, excellent food and drinks. Restful.
