I'll be moving to Manizales for a teaching gig for the next two years. Has anyone been there and have an opinion of the city and surrounding area? Does anyone have idea for long weekend trips?
So far the only information I've received is about how stoked the guys are about the ladies, which doesn't particularly help or interest me. Does anyhow have any other experiences in the Andes?

Thanks!

I guess by now you know not to buy the Lonely Planet guide to Colombia. Curious, are you familiar with Latin America? That makes a difference on advice given.

Since I don't know the answer, a couple pointers that may or may not be old hat. If you don't want to be the center of the above mentioned attention. Not a good idea, especially as a teacher. Find a family to associate with. It is extended relationships that make things happen in latin america. Your first living set up may be a homestay..quite common.

There is still a lot of negative info out about Colombia. A lot is simply recycled without checking into it's continued validity. BUT.. stuff still does happen. Areas under non-governmental control shift all the time. The only trustworthy sources are the locals in your area. Travel in Colombia is very scenic..but you want to know which routes are OK to take. Highly unlikely you face any kidnap threats but robberies happen. One scam still going strong is someone offering you something to eat or drink on the bus. Laced with strong tranquilizers, when you wake up your stuff is gone.

Paul,

Thanks for the links.I need to relearn my Spanish. My mother grew up in Mexico City and I live in the deep south of Texas so I should know a lot more than I do! Shame on me. I'm thinking of doing to immersion this summer here in San Antonio before I go. I'll be sharing a flat with another teacher so I doubt I'l get much practice there.

I've heard the people there are some of the friendliest. So far my contact with the people involved in the school it's been absolutley right. I'm very excited!

Thanks
Stella
