Trying to plan a trip to the Galapagos as part of a month-long Ecuador/Colombia journey in June of this year. Does anyone have any tips on how to get a cheap tour, without sacrificing too much? I don't mind cold water showers or cramped quarters, but I don't want to skimp on the wildlife viewing or have to sleep with las cuckarachas. Any tips (book before hand/once there? etc.) would be greatly appreciated!!

I didn't make it to the galapagos because of the costs (I was looking at booking ahead), but here's some info I heard from other travellers (to do it cheaply), and this is if you have the extra time to spare as well:

don't book ahead, fly out to the islands and see if you can hop on a boat. if you're a solo traveller, chances are pretty decent to find an empty spot on a boat. it's so much cheaper to do it this way than booking ahead of time.
