I'm just starting to get busy planning a short trip. It's been a little bit difficult to find information about traveling between these countries overland. Is it possible to take a train from La Paz to Arica? Has anybody done this? I think it shouldn't be too hard to get from Cuzco across the lake to La Paz, but after that I'm kind of stumped.

Began Gap Year Trip Six Years Ago |
you'll probably have to go to puno to take a boat over to copa. we took a 10hr sightseeing tour bus from cusco to puno, it was about $35. from copacabana, you can make it more into bolivia. we had to cancel the bolivia part of our peru trip because we figured the $100+ visa fee wasn't worth it for 2-4 nights in bolivia!

I hadn't really considered the visa fee. That might make it not worth it, but I'm not sure. It's the airfare from US east coast to Peru that's killing me right now.
Yes, that's exactly the route I'm planning for Peru into Bolivia. The bus from Cusco to Puno seems fun, as does the boat to Copa. But getting out of Bolivia and into Chile is proving a little more difficult. I heard that EFE had trains that ran that line, but their website seems not to exist right now. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Goldie Wilson for president. |

Knows What a Schengen Visa Is |
I travelled twice the last six months to Peru and Bolivia. I could give you some advice if you're more specific about where you want to go.
Just a hint, the route I did - Lima - Pisco - Ica - Nazca - Cuzco (trek to Machu Picchu) - Puno (Titicaca lake and the islands) - Copacabana - La Paz - Uyuni (Tour Salar de Uyuni) - San Pedro de Atacama - Arica - Arequipa - Lima. The second trip was only Bolivia. I can't answer your visa questions though, as I didn't need visa to those countires. __________________________ gdzie mnie wiatr poniesie |

Thanks, I might be getting in touch with both of you guys for some more advice. I try to stay away from buses if I can, but in South America they're kind of the standard. The ones I've taken in Chile and Argentina weren't so bad, so that's probably how it'll be.
Reciprocity visas are so counter productive. I was going to go to Bolivia. They were going to get my tourist dollars. Now they just might not. Who is that helping? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Goldie Wilson for president. |
